Essendon coach Brad Scott has moved to clarify his post-game comments from last Sunday<\/a> regarding Nate Caddy. <\/p>\n

The fourth-year Bombers coach also said he\u2019s \u201cbeen here before\u201d with regards to external pressure on his job, claiming the heat doesn\u2019t faze him. <\/p>\n

Following the 63-point loss to Port Adelaide in Round 2 \u2014 which prompted a players-only meeting in the aftermath<\/a> \u2014 Scott remarked that his side was \u201cdemoralised\u201d after Caddy, running into an open goalsquare in the second quarter, grazed the post with his kick. <\/p>\n

Scott was criticised for singling out the 20-year-old Caddy, who kicked four goals from 12 disposals and was ultimately voted as \u2018player of the match\u2019 by his teammates. <\/p>\n

AFL 360 co-host Garry Lyon said he \u201cdidn\u2019t like the singling out of Caddy\u201d<\/a>, while Essendon legend Tim Watson called Scott\u2019s comments \u201cinflammatory\u201d. <\/p>\n

Addressing reporters on Thursday morning at the Hangar, an under-siege Scott offered an explanation for his comments. <\/p>\n

\u201cPost-game, particularly after a loss like that, you\u2019ve got to think about who I\u2019m talking to \u2014 and in the majority of a post-game press conference, I\u2019m talking to the players,\u201d Scott began. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut, I\u2019ve already spoken to the players post-game, and (in the presser) I\u2019m speaking to the players first and foremost, and our fans after that. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut in terms of Nate Caddy and selfishness, I spoke to Nate at half-time, I spoke to Nate post-game, I spoke to the players post-game, and then did a post-game press conference. So, they are crystal clear as to what I\u2019m talking about. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut for everyone else \u2014 and I\u2019m not always going to do this \u2014 if you make a mistake and you get demoralised by it, and more importantly if the rest of the team gets demoralised by it, you\u2019re being selfish, because you\u2019re thinking about yourself and not the team. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo, be disappointed, but get back into the contest \u2014 and that\u2019s part of the area of growth for us as a team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scott revealed that Caddy was in fact voted by his teammates as Essendon\u2019s best player last Sunday, going on to laud his growth over just a six-month span. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo, what Nate Caddy did in the second half \u2026 both at the game, post-game and in review \u2014 where the players voted for \u2018Cadds\u2019 as their player of the week, not because of his four goals in the second half, but because of his response to what he said in his own words was an \u2018embarrassing moment\u2019,\u201d Scott continued. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I was harder on the team in terms of their reaction to that miss in the second half, but \u2018Cadds\u2019, he has grown before our eyes in one week, so where he is right now compared to where he was six months ago is chalk and cheese. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd so that\u2019s the reason why players like Caddy \u2014 I could reel off a whole lot of others \u2014 why I\u2019m so optimistic about this group, because they\u2019re made of the right stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Bombers have lost their opening two games against Hawthorn and Port Adelaide by more than 10 goals, with a problematic team defence rearing its head early in the season. <\/p>\n

And after a cataclysmic injury plague swept the club last year, it hasn\u2019t managed a win since last May. <\/p>\n

But when he was asked how he was personally coping with the arduous start to the campaign, Scott said he was \u201cfine\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been here before, and I know the way out,\u201d Scott defiantly said. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about me. And post-game, I\u2019m trying to preach a culture of \u2018invest in the team at all costs\u2019. Don\u2019t be selfish. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about me. What will be will be. When you\u2019re a head coach, it ends at some point. It\u2019s just a matter of how and when. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re all going to die at some point, too. You don\u2019t spend your whole time thinking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
