(ABC News: Conor Byrne)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The trials will take place in northern Queensland, but DETSI senior conservation officer Daniel Guymer said the department was still determining suitable test locations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said crocodile density was a factor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[Somewhere] we&#8217;re going to get a solid number of movements through the array to be able to glean the effectiveness of the technology,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">DETSI has provided $359,000 towards the project since January 2025, as well as thousands of videos to train the AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">JCU researcher and project lead Tao &#8220;Kevin&#8221; Huang said the trials would shape further improvements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Huang said the system had already achieved &#8220;reasonable&#8221; results, and he was hoping for at least 70 per cent accuracy in the trials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There are some challenges in this research because of the light reflecting from the water surface, the changing conditions, and also the floating logs and debris that look similar to crocodiles,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Corporate mugshot of man in a suit jacket and shirt\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/8ce893544637fa8b622c79555cfdb7e9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tao &#8220;Kevin&#8221; Huang says success would mean big benefits for safety.
