(Supplied: MIFF)

But the spirit of Elizabeth is an all-pervasive cloud hanging pendulously over them, so much so that she appears to hold sway, which sees Montgomery and Krieps adopting dual roles as the dead woman’s ghost insidiously assumes control of their bodies.

There’s a hint of Wuthering Heights’s eeriness to this frightening scenario, but if it looks like an icy chill has sunk into Montgomery’s bones, it’s not acting.

“I’m happy to work 17 hours a day, seven days a week, it doesn’t bother me at all, but this shoot was incredibly cold,” Montgomery says, laughing.

“It was the tail end of June, and it was freezing with hoarfrost.”

It was so cold that the battery fluid inside Arrernte and Kalkadoon cinematographer Tyson Perkins’s (nephew of director Rachel Perkins) camera froze, mid-take.

“So did the tip of my pen,” Montgomery says. “But that cold, and the isolation with all of the crew away from their families, transfers to the screen in a very knowing way.”

Montgomery found shooting on location in New Zealand beautiful and finger-numbing. (Supplied: MIFF)

Picture perfect

Went Up the Hill’s breathtaking backdrop is part of New Zealand-born, Sydney-based filmmaker Van Grinsven’s story.

“I grew up on the road,” he says. “My parents are musicians, and we’d drive up and down a lot, with memories of that particular spot coming into my head, and the idea of two people in a glass-walled room standing with a coffin between them.”

That’s how the creative spark of Van Grinsven’s films ignites. “It’s always a really visual thing,” he says.

His debut feature, the stylishly queer erotic thriller Sequin in a Blue Room, was the same.

“It was a young guy standing on the street, looking up at an apartment building with the room glowing blue,” Van Grinsven says.

It was shot on a micro-budget while he was still at film school, then selected to debut at the Sydney Film Festival. The director was inspired by New Queer Cinema heroes, including Gus Van Sant, Gregg Araki and Todd Haynes.

“They all made their first features with no permission and no money,” he says.

Sequin in a Blue Room was the calling card that attracted the attention of super-producers Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton of Causeway Films, the dynamic duo behind brilliant films including Of an Age, The Babadook and Talk to Me.

“They are two of the best,” Van Grinsven says. “It’s been an incredible experience, with my co-writer Jory Anast, developing the film and learning from them.”

Meet the twin directors on Steven Spielberg’s radar

Aussie directors Danny and Michael Philippou are behind the $143 million smash-hit Talk to Me, but they won’t be switching Adelaide for Hollywood.

Went Up the Hill was a much bigger endeavour, including filming sequences on a frozen lake, but not the actual frozen lake.

“We’re not allowed to do that, for health and safety reasons,” Van Grinsven grins. “But they were dripping wet in that freezing environment, on a frozen lake set built outdoors, next to the frozen lake.”

That’s the great thing about filming in New Zealand, where they’ve shot Avatar and The Lord of the Rings. “Crews are really experienced with integrating a real location into a set build,” Van Grinsven says. “They’re experts at it, and we were super lucky.”

Luck of the draw

Luck keeps coming up, with Montgomery appearing genuinely starstruck when talking about being cast alongside Krieps.

“Who am I? Stranger Things boy coming to act with old mate Phantom Thread,” he says, amazed. “I’m a very f***ing intense, creative person, and I put everything into everything I do, so it’s like a relationship.”

Krieps, likewise, has a very focused approach to acting. Movement coach Polly Bennett has worked on everything from Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn to Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, and helped the pair find their rhythm as Jack, Jill and the usurping Elizabeth.

Dacre Montgomery says playing Jack in Samuel Van Grinsven’s Went Up The Hill was his dream gig. (Supplied)

“Vicky and I don’t see it as a supernatural story,” Montgomery says. “We see it as a story where two people have created this antagonist in their life in order to deal with the trauma that she’s left them. Their version of Elizabeth is going to be very different.”

Even though she’s never seen, Elizabeth jumped off the page.

“Samuel had such a clear understanding around the rules of the possession, aided by Kirsty Cameron’s costumes, Sherree Phillips’s production design and Tyson’s cinematography,” Montgomery says.

“It’s all Samuel, recruiting incredibly talented people,” he adds.

“I’ll be forever thankful. I hadn’t played an Australian character before this, or had a film in an Australian festival, so it’s so good to be home and in amongst this energy. It’s changed my whole life.”

Went Up the Hill screens at MIFF, then opens nationally on September 11

Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery was at home in Perth with his partner, model Liv Pollock, when he…

[8
64,63,46716,46713,134,1736,46715,46714,46712
post-56606","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-entertainment","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-australian-film","tag-dacre-montgomery","tag-entertainment","tag-new-zealand","tag-samuel-van-grinsven","tag-vicky-krieps","tag-went-up-the-hill
["GET
