{"id":566909,"date":"2026-03-27T02:56:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T02:56:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/566909\/"},"modified":"2026-03-27T02:56:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T02:56:10","slug":"assault-charges-against-former-footballer-wendell-sailor-dropped-on-mental-health-grounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/566909\/","title":{"rendered":"Assault charges against former footballer Wendell Sailor dropped on mental health grounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">All charges relating to two alleged drunken rampages against former dual-code international footballer Wendell Sailor have been dismissed by a Sydney court under mental health grounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2024, Sailor was charged with two counts of common assault and other offences after allegedly refusing to leave a licensed premises in Sydney&#8217;s CBD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The former Brisbane Broncos and Wallabies winger remained near Sydney city venue Pappy&#8217;s Bar on Erskine St after being refused service due to his conduct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Sailor was also last year charged with offences after an alleged drunken night at a bar in Wollongong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The court heard his conduct included &#8220;aggressive&#8221; behaviour towards a taxi driver and resisting arrest when police were called.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man in dark suit, pink shirt and grey hat\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/28a9a7f2cb2acec9ac1cae73d4faa2c6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sailor is now under the care of his doctor as he undergoes medical treatment. (ABC News: Jamie McKinnell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In Downing Centre Local Court, Magistrate Jennifer Atkinson said she accepted Sailor&#8217;s case fell under Section 14 of the Mental Health Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The section allows magistrates to divert defendants with mental health impairments from the criminal justice system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;After reading the report from his consultant forensic psychiatrist Dr Sathish Dayalan, he appeared to be suffering from a major depressive disorder around the time of the offences,&#8221; Ms Atkinson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;His excessive alcohol use was probably a by-product of his disorder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Discharged into doctor&#8217;s care<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The court heard Sailor has undertaken psychiatric treatment and started therapy since the second alleged incident in Wollongong, starting at the beginning of this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The court was told Sailor had already pleaded guilty to three offences relating to the two separate incidents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Atkinson said she accepted the detailed health plan put forward by his lawyer Adam Houda to deal with his mental health and alcohol issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The applicant [Sailor] has nothing on his criminal record prior to the two incidents,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Atkinson also noted the death of Sailor&#8217;s mother and the end of his relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I am dismissing the charges and discharging him into the care of his GP to comply with his treatment plan,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"All charges relating to two alleged drunken rampages against former dual-code international footballer Wendell Sailor have been dismissed&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":566910,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[24278,64,63,1108,226217,278890,2733,198757,85,278889,161246,182874,184902,278891,278892],"class_list":["post-566909","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-assault","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-court","tag-downing-centre-local-court","tag-former-footballer","tag-nsw","tag-nsw-court","tag-sports","tag-sydney-bar","tag-sydney-court","tag-sydney-news","tag-wendell-sailor","tag-wendell-sailor-arrested","tag-wendell-sailor-court"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/566909","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=566909"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/566909\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/566910"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=566909"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=566909"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=566909"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
