The pic follows the founder of the Los Angeles indie pop rock band <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/eels\/\" id=\"auto-tag_eels\" data-tag=\"eels\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eels<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/mark-oliver-everett\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mark-oliver-everett\" data-tag=\"mark-oliver-everett\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Oliver Everett<\/a> aka E, as he battles his lifelong struggles navigating mental health and music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThree-time Emmy winner <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/judd-apatow\/\" id=\"auto-tag_judd-apatow\" data-tag=\"judd-apatow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Judd Apatow<\/a> has come aboard to produce with Utopia founder <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/robert-schwartzman\/\" id=\"auto-tag_robert-schwartzman\" data-tag=\"robert-schwartzman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Schwartzman<\/a>. Gus Black is directing. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-deadline-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Utopia-Studios-logo.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"192\" width=\"300\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tUtopia Studios<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe title is the latest in a series of rock docs from Utopia following Meet Me in the Bathroom, Hung Up on a Dream: The Zombies Documentary and Pavements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAs a teenager, Everett found his brilliant but troubled father dead. Years later, just as his musical dreams began to take shape, he lost both his sister and his mother in devastating succession. Confronted with unimaginable grief, Everett chose not the pursuit of fame but a deeply personal artistic path \u2014 transforming loss into an acclaimed modern music catalog spanning 15 studio albums and beginning with the 1996 debut album, Beautiful Freak. That disc spawned a pair of UK Top Singles in \u201cNovocaine for the Soul\u201d and \u201cSusan\u2019s House,\u201d and \u201cNovocaine\u201d topped Billboard\u2019s Modern Rock chart for two weeks in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tEels have drawn praise from such performers as Tom Waits and Pete Townshend, the latter extolling E\u2019s 2008 memoir Things the Grandchildren Should Know: \u201cE\u2019s story is a good example of the way an adverse life in childhood and adolescence shapes an artist, creates eccentricity and ultimately contributes to brilliance. I learned more about my own business and my own methods by reading this book than I did by reading the life of Chuck Berry, Elvis or David Bowie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tEels\u2019 music can be heard in such features and TV series as the Shrek franchise, American Beauty, Yes Man, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and most recently in the hit series Yellowjackets and Lynne Ramsay\u2019s Cannes Film Festival feature film Die My Love. The pic is being packaged independently and is in production. Kevin Gasser will serve as EP. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBlack has directed videos by Sheryl Crow, Phoebe Bridgers, Laufey and Sombr\u2019s 2025 VMA-winning \u201cBack to Friends\u201d video and has worked with Eels as a video collaborator throughout their career.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cE\u2019s story is a truly unique and compelling tale of an American original,\u201d Black said. \u201cShaped by harrowing circumstances, he chose to forge his own artistic path \u2014 one full of jarring twists, dark turns and unexpectedly bright forecasts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tApatow added: \u201cI\u2019ve always thought E\u2019s story would make for a fantastic documentary. It\u2019s rare that a music story so honestly explores the intersection of songwriting and mental health.
