{"id":567345,"date":"2026-03-27T07:37:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T07:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/567345\/"},"modified":"2026-03-27T07:37:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T07:37:09","slug":"cycling-and-road-safety-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/567345\/","title":{"rendered":"Cycling and road safety \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sir, \u2013 While some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cycling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cycling\/\">cyclists<\/a> do behave in ways that are dangerous, irresponsible or just plain rude to other people, the amount of coverage that these examples are given is out of all proportion to the actual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/road-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/road-safety\/\">danger<\/a> caused (\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/letters\/2026\/03\/26\/paris-has-become-more-bicycle-friendly-but-dangerous-cyclists-remain-a-menace\/#:~:text=Monsieur%20Gr%C3%A9goire%20has%20promised%20stricter,of%20which%20there%20are%20many.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/letters\/2026\/03\/26\/paris-has-become-more-bicycle-friendly-but-dangerous-cyclists-remain-a-menace\/#:~:text=Monsieur%20Gr%C3%A9goire%20has%20promised%20stricter,of%20which%20there%20are%20many.\">Dangerous cyclists remain a menace in a more bicycle-friendly Paris<\/a>\u201d, Letters, March 26th). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It remains the case that we live in a country where drivers tragically cause hundreds of deaths and thousands of life-altering injuries every year, numbers that are currently moving in the wrong direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">No matter how often we see a cyclist jumping a red light, or riding on a pavement, or failing to use lights, we all daily witness a far greater number of people using multi-tonne vehicles in ways that are illegal and dangerous. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The fact that it\u2019s so commonplace (and that as car occupants it often doesn\u2019t feel dangerous) shouldn\u2019t make us immune to the vastly greater danger caused by these behaviours when compared to anything a cyclist is able to cause. \u2013 Yours, etc,<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">DAVE MATHIESON,<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Salthill,<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Galway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sir, \u2013 As well as cyclists not having proper lighting or hi-vis clothing, a very large number of them completely ignore traffic lights. Last night while stopped at a red light on Fitzwilliam Street no less than eight cyclists went through red.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The companies who employ food delivery cyclists should be obliged to dress their employees appropriately. The majority of them wear dark clothing, no visible lights but worst of all no helmets.
