The police response on the night of the protest is being investigated amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/13\/police-watchdog-to-investigate-alleged-police-brutality-at-sydney-protest-against-isaac-herzog-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allegations of police brutality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">NSW police released video of the Thursday morning arrest. The person was subsequently charged with hindering or resisting police at the Herzog rally, intimidating police without actual bodily harm, throwing a missile at police without actual bodily harm and using indecent language.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They were granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre local court on 15 April. They must report to the police three times a week and not go within 300 metres of town hall. The police video then cuts to the arrested person being escorted by an officer in plain clothes into a police van.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Their lawyer, Nick Hanna, said in a social media post that the police entered the home while his client was asleep and half naked. He alleged the police \u201csmashed the door open\u201d, and he posted a photo of a damaged door.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe main allegations \u2026 are that [they] threw a water bottle at an officer and then threatened to assault another officer if he touched [them],\u201d Hanna said on Instagram. \u201cThey seized [their] phone and required [them] to provide the passcode.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hanna said the arrest showed the situation was \u201ccrazy\u201d in NSW, which has introduced increasingly tough anti-protest laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201c[They] went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/04\/isaac-herzog-israel-president-australia-visit-controversy-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a protest against an [alleged] war criminal<\/a> [and] is not alleged to pose any ongoing danger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A badly damaged door\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/335.jpg\" width=\"120\" height=\"137.91044776119404\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"dcr-evn1e9\"\/>A door broken by police during the 42-year-old\u2019s arrest, according to their lawyer. Photograph: nicholashanna1\/Instagram<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019ve been a criminal lawyer for almost 20 years, and I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever seen anything like what happened today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Guardian Australia asked NSW police about Hanna\u2019s allegations, but a spokesperson said the force was unable to provide further details while the case was before the court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The assistant principal at Redfern Legal Centre, Sam Lee, who is a policing accountability expert, reviewed the arrest footage and stated: \u201cThe charges, although serious, do not match the level of policing used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt feels like this very public and extreme use of police powers is being used as a warning to protesters. That warning being \u2018don\u2019t mess with us or else\u2019,\u201d Lee said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The officers who arrested the protester on Thursday are part of Operation Odin, which is a group of operational support officers. In 2024, the state Greens justice spokesperson, Sue Higginson, asked the police minister, Yasmin Catley, what role the officers had.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Catley said their responsibilities include assisting with protests and events with large crowds, supporting local and specialist police, specialist search operations, high-visibility policing and executing search warrants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The NSW premier, Chris Minns, and the police commissioner, Mal Lanyon, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/10\/chris-minns-defends-police-in-impossible-situation-after-accusations-of-violence-against-protesters-in-sydney\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">defended the police actions<\/a> at the Herzog rally. Minns said in the days after the 9 February protest that police were placed in an \u201cimpossible situation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lanyon said rally speakers had \u201cincited the crowd\u201d and police had initially shown \u201cremarkable restraint\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/14\/inside-the-chaos-at-sydney-anti-herzog-protest-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">until protesters attempted to march<\/a> to parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe police did what they needed to do, which was to hold the line and then fall and move the protesters back with a view to dispersing them.
