The storm\u2019s reach had extended to Chevron\u2019s huge Gorgon gas plant on nearby Barrow Island, forcing the shutdown of one of its three LNG-production units, the company said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Chevron-operated Wheatstone LNG hub in WA.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/8e569998ea3c2588335b70c23f04f13c0fd0e13b.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>The Chevron-operated Wheatstone LNG hub in WA.<\/p>\n<p>Woodside Energy, the largest Australian LNG company, said on Friday it had demobilised its workforce from its North West Shelf offshore platforms that feed the Karratha Gas Plant, disrupting production.<\/p>\n<p>Together, the affected projects on WA\u2019s resource-rich coast account for as much as 8 per cent of global supplies of LNG, natural gas that has been super-chilled until it turns into a liquid so it can be shipped around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The outages come at a time when demand and prices for cargoes of the fuel are rocketing amid the blockage of oil and gas tankers in the Strait of Hormuz off Iran\u2019s southern coast, and missile strikes damaging major LNG facilities in Qatar.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/business\/markets\/the-charts-that-show-how-the-oil-shock-is-worsening-and-hitting-motorists-20260319-p5pqxw.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\" \" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/21262a005e8db4eabba7795ab87dce8fd721ab68bda823755d923d19692fa579.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Countries across Asia are particularly reliant on Qatari LNG shipped through the strait to power their heaters and electric grids and are increasingly looking to Australia \u2013 the world\u2019s third-largest supplier of LNG, behind Qatar \u2013 to make up for the drop-off in shipments.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is seeking to leverage Australia\u2019s role as a major LNG producer to make sure the country isn\u2019t left behind in the global oil supply crunch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur gas exports are very important in the region,\u201d Albanese said on Friday. \u201cAustralia is a reliable supplier. We expect reciprocation in economic relations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Chevron Australia said Gorgon\u2019s remaining two LNG-production units and its domestic gas facility continued to operate. The company said it would resume full production at both \u201conce it is safe to do so\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChevron Australia is working to restore production at the Gorgon and Wheatstone gas facilities following production outages,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Chevron-operated Wheatstone platform off the coast of WA.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/44ca0efffe6a778a4d20efca1697c2c5316e583d.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>The Chevron-operated Wheatstone platform off the coast of WA.<\/p>\n<p>Perth-based Woodside said it continued to produce gas at its offshore Macedon gasfield and Pluto LNG plant. The federal government is developing a scheme to force producers to reserve some for the domestic market.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/81727a1bbb85979078df53b12ce80d0e5330afdf.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>UBS energy analyst Tom Allen said the bank had lifted its forecasts for one-off cargoes of LNG in the North Asian market from $US13 per million British thermal units to $US23.60 for the rest of the year following <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/business\/markets\/drone-strike-on-key-qatari-plant-reignites-global-gas-crunch-fears-20260303-p5o71v.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attacks on Qatar\u2019s Ras Laffan LNG hub<\/a>. He said two of that plant\u2019s 14 gas-processing trains might take \u201cthree to five years\u201d to repair.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Australia is a huge natural gas producer and exporter, price rises on global markets could also drag costs higher for Australian gas buyers if the increases hold, as LNG price swings influence local supply contracts.
