Major League Baseball (MLB)\u2019s 2026 Opening Day once again underlined the global strength of the game, with 247 players<\/a> from outside the United States featuring across the 26-man Opening Day rosters, representing 16 countries and territories. <\/p>\n

The international presence includes standout names such as World Baseball Classic 2026 MVP Maikel Garcia from Venezuela. <\/p>\n

The new Baseball World Champions, Venezuela<\/a>, fresh off its historic World Championship title, ranks second globally with 60 players, while the Dominican Republic continues its long-standing leadership with 93 players, maintaining the top spot every year since records began in 1995.<\/p>\n

Canada, whose previous high was 19 players in 2007, matches its highest total since 2013 with 17 players, including WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup alumnus Josh Naylor<\/a> (Seattle Mariners). <\/p>\n

Japan also continues to demonstrate its elite talent pipeline, placing 14 players on Opening Day rosters – matching 2010 for their second-most all-time number behind 16 in 2008 – highlighted by WBSC Premier12 star Tatsuya<\/a> Imai<\/a> (Houston Astros), Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist Munetaka Murakami<\/a> (Chicago White Sox) and Kazuma Okamoto<\/a> (Toronto Blue Jays).<\/p>\n

Further illustrating baseball\u2019s global footprint, additional representation includes Puerto Rico (14), Mexico (7), Cura\u00e7ao (4), Panama (4), Colombia (3), Korea (3) – including WBSC Premier12 star Ha-Seong Kim<\/a> of the Atlanta Braves and National Team Captain at the WBSC Premier12 2024 Sung Mun Song<\/a> of the San Diego Padres – Aruba (1), Bahamas (1) – Jazz Chisholm Jr. of the New York Mets who represented Great Britain at the 2026 World Baseball Classic – Honduras (1), Nicaragua (1), and Taiwan (1) – Kai Wei Teng of the Houston Astros who helped Chinese Taipei win the 2019 Asian Baseball Championship. <\/p>\n

Looking at each club, the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres lead with 15 internationally born players each, followed closely by the Houston Astros (14); the Arizona Diamondbacks and Miami Marlins (13 each); the Seattle Mariners (12); and the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and San Francisco Giants (11 each). <\/p>\n

The Braves also top the league in diversity, with players from eight different countries and territories outside the U.S, the most among the 30 clubs in the Majors. They are followed by the Astros and Padres (7 each), and the Red Sox, Colorado Rockies, Mariners and Blue Jays (6 each).<\/p>\n

Overall, internationally born players account for 26.1% of all players across Opening Day rosters and lists (247 of 948 players. 948 = 780 active 26-man roster players and 168 Major League players on injured or restricted lists). Notably, 145 players (18.6%) on active rosters participated in the 2026 World Baseball Classic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Opening Day action begins<\/p>\n

The MLB season opened on Wednesday, March 25, when the New York Yankees shut out\u00a0the Giants, 7-0<\/a>,\u00a0in front of 40,856 fans at Oracle Park in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

The defending World Series Champions, Los Angeles Dodgers, where one of 22 teams opening their season on Thursday, March 26<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The six teams that didn’t play on Wednesday and Thursday (Oakland A’s, the 2025 runner-up Toronto Blue Jays, Colorado Rockies, Miami Marlins, Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves) will take the field for the first time on Friday, March 27, which features an eight-game programme.<\/p>\n
