She\u2019s a master nutrition coach and sits on the board of several foundations focused on getting kids moving. For her, being able to move freely and without pain\u2014down a technical singletrack or when deadlifting at the gym\u2014is the key to happiness and longevity.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">For Starrett, fitness simply wasn\u2019t an issue when she got her first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/bikes-gear\/mountain-bike\/a27103056\/electric-mountain-bikes\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/bikes-gear\/mountain-bike\/a27103056\/electric-mountain-bikes\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"mountain bike\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mountain bike<\/a>. Neither was strength, considering she was a longtime CrossFit enthusiast and passionate about strength training. She was, however, hampered by her admitted lack of technical skills. In their words, durability means being strong and mobile enough to handle anything, from shoveling heavy snow without your back going out or being sore for a week to bouncing back faster from a hard workout or ride.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cI\u2019m obsessed with the concept of durability,\u201d she says. She believes that a cyclist\u2014especially one who\u2019s getting older\u2014should be focused on creating the most resilient body possible, so that it is more capable of handling things like the inevitable topple-overs that come when you\u2019re<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/skills-tips\/a69842055\/10-best-cycling-skills\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/skills-tips\/a69842055\/10-best-cycling-skills\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"learning new skills\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">learning new skills<\/a> on the bike.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cIf you\u2019re riding, you\u2019re probably going to take a few little crashes,\u201d she says. \u201cThe more durable you are, the stronger you are, the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">As we now know, after age 50, bone density begins to decrease. For cyclists, this can be even more prominent since the low-impact sport does little to develop bone strength unless paired with strength training or other higher-impact activities. As bone density decreases, the risk of fractures and breaks increases, even from minor falls (like a slow-speed topple off of your bike). The more you can buffer against this by building muscle to protect those bones and by slowing down the bone density loss itself, the better.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">To make this happen, Starrett encourages older cyclists to do at least two full-body <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a69275490\/ride-stronger-program\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a69275490\/ride-stronger-program\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength-training\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strength-training<\/a> sessions per week. These sessions don\u2019t need to be hours-long\u2014just 30 to 45 minutes is all it takes to see improvements, she says. It doesn\u2019t need to be cycling specific either. Instead, these workouts should target all your major muscle groups.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">A great place to find strength-training workouts and advice for cyclists is Bicycling\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a69275490\/ride-stronger-program\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a69275490\/ride-stronger-program\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Guide to Strength Training\" data-node-id=\"8.3\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Guide to Strength Training<\/a>, which has tons of tips and exercises from experts and is free to Bicycling members.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cCyclists often think they need a strength routine that just builds leg muscles,\u201d Starrett says. \u201cBut that really misses the mark. You need way more than just strong legs to be a good cyclist, and to be a durable human. Everybody needs to strengthen all parts of their body. And cyclists are no different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">She also adds that strength training alone won\u2019t make you durable. Even if you have a huge amount of muscle, if you can\u2019t move it\u2014you can\u2019t bend down in a deep squat, you can\u2019t put your arm all the way above your head\u2014you have a mobility limitation that\u2019s going to hurt your durability.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">When you\u2019re more mobile, meaning you\u2019re able to move freely with no stiff spots or tightness, you\u2019re able to ride in more comfortable positions on the bike, and if you crash, you\u2019re less hampered by an impingement that might lead to a harder hit. And as we age, Starrett notes that we tend to lose mobility thanks to both the natural aging process but also to our increasingly sedentary lifestyles. If you only are moving around when you\u2019re riding a bike, but are otherwise at the desk or on the couch, Starrett wants you to move more.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Rather than taking a yoga class or starting an extensive hour-long stretching routine, though, Starrett is a fan of working in movement and mobility throughout your day. Brewing coffee in the morning? It\u2019s a great chance to do some deep squats and work on your hip mobility. Watching TV? Foam roll your legs, use a lacrosse ball and a wall to work into your shoulder and back muscles, or use the couch to help you do the Starretts\u2019 favorite hip stretch, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ulgAOykAgV4\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ulgAOykAgV4\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"the couch stretch\" data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the couch stretch<\/a>. Starrett is also a big fan of standing desks, or adding a walking pad under your standing desk.
