Structures have been destroyed and more than 1000 people remain without power as the cleanup begins in Western Australia following ex-tropical cyclone Narelle.<\/p>\n

Heavy rain and destructive winds caused widespread damage across the north, with the towns of Exmouth and Carnarvon particularly impacted.<\/p>\n

There have been no reports of serious injury or death.<\/p>\n

WA Premier Roger Cook has announced financial relief packages for those impacted by Cyclone Narelle.\u00a0 (ABC News: Pip Waller)<\/p>\n

Premier Roger Cook has announced one-off payments of $2000 for major home damage and up to $4000 for those whose homes have been destroyed.<\/p>\n

The payments are to help those impacted secure temporary accommodation, food and clothing, and assist with transport.<\/p>\n

“I want to acknowledge the Western Australians that are impacted by this severe, cyclonic event. We’ve got your back and help is coming,” Mr Cook said.<\/p>\n

“The worst appears to be behind us.”Structures destroyed and roads closed<\/p>\n

Damage assessments are ongoing, however emergency services minister Paul Papalia today confirmed four structures in Exmouth had been destroyed and seven severely damaged, with more expected.<\/p>\n

Learmonth Airport, which sustained significant infrastructure damage, will remain closed to commercial flights for at least another week, while 30 pastoral properties have been extensively damaged.<\/p>\n

Flooding has forced multiple road closures, including sections of the great northern highway, north west coastal highway and Indian Ocean drive.<\/p>\n

Bullara Station in WA’s north has also been heavily impacted.<\/p>\n

“We’ve seen vision that confirmed there is a vast amount of water in the region,” Mr Papalia said.<\/p>\n

“We just ask that people comply with those road closures for their own safety.”<\/p>\n

As of Sunday morning about 1400 properties in Exmouth in WA’s north remained without power, while most outages in Carnarvon had been restored.<\/p>\n

Water supply in Exmouth had also been stabilised, with bottled water delivered to the town.<\/p>\n

Towns on flood watch<\/p>\n

On Sunday a flood watch was issued for catchments in the Gascoyne, Central and Lower West areas, with the potential for localised flooding.<\/p>\n

Department of Fire and Emergency Services commissioner Darren Klemm said he was expecting flood waters to reach a moderate level over the next 24 hours and urged people to prepare their homes.<\/p>\n

“There’s a potential nine to 10 properties that will be at risk, so our personnel will be in touch with the people in Carnarvon,” Commissioner Klemm said.<\/p>\n

“We really do want people to be patient in terms of the roads. It’s going to take a long time for the water to dissipate.<\/p>\n

“I think it’s weeks in terms of cleanup. We’ll get in and get it done quickly.”<\/p>\n
