Amazon\u2019s bet on \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d has paid off handsomely, with the film recently surpassing \u201cCreed III\u201d to become the company\u2019s highest grossing movie ever.<\/p>\n
And it was a big bet, with a reported budget of around $200 million<\/a>. That\u2019s a big price tag for any film, but especially one that\u2019s not a sequel or part of an existing franchise. Instead, it\u2019s based on a bestselling science fiction novel by Andy Weir, whose book \u201cThe Martian\u201d was adapted into a successful film a decade ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n And that\u2019s not the only thing that makes \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d feel unconventional. For long stretches of the film, Ryan Gosling is the only human actor on screen, as the scientist he plays works with a rock-like alien to solve the mystery of of why multiple stars \u2014 including our own \u2014 seem to be dimming.<\/p>\n But after 10 days in theaters, \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d has brought in an estimated $164.3 million in North America, as well as $136.2 million overseas, according to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. Domestically, it only fell 32% in its second weekend, to $54.5 million, so its final box office numbers should be significantly higher when it leaves theaters.<\/p>\n That makes \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d the biggest hit of 2026 (so far), as well as one of the most successful non-franchise, non-sequel films of the past decade.\u00a0<\/p>\n And it\u2019s good news for what\u2019s now known as Amazon MGM Studios. The company\u2019s cinematic ambitions have evolved over time, from distributing smaller, critically acclaimed titles like \u201cThe Big Sick\u201d and \u201cManchester by the Sea\u201d to more recently acquiring movie studio MGM<\/a> (leading to a battle for control of the James Bond franchise<\/a>) and declaring its intention to bring 14 movies into theaters every year<\/a>.<\/p>\n Until \u201cHail Mary,\u201d those movies \u2014 including \u201cAfter the Hunt,\u201d \u201cMercy,\u201d and the controversial \u201cMelania\u201d documentary<\/a> \u2014 seemed to be falling flat with audiences.<\/p>\n Techcrunch event<\/p>\n \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSan Francisco, CA
