South Australia has won the Sheffield Shield, bowling out Victoria in under an hour on day five to claim back-to-back titles.

Victoria needed just 82 runs to win coming into day five, but only had three wickets in the shed.

They ultimately lasted just seven overs, with Henry Thornton taking the final two wickets of the match.

South Australia was sent in to bat on a difficult looking pitch at the Junction Oval, and found themselves in early trouble, making just 198.

Only captain Nathan McSweeney offered much resistance with the bat, making 52 from 127 balls.

Victoria then put themselves in a strong position, thanks to some middle-order hitting from Fergus O’Neill (64 off 136) and Will Sutherland (34 off 57), to post 261 in reply.

Enter Test star Alex Carey, who saved the day for South Australia in the second innings, making 103 and allowing SA to set 258 and take a tricky lead.

Nathan McAndrew made 60 and survived 144 balls alongside Carey to set up the innings.

"Alex

McAndrew would receive man of the match honours for that effort, while also taking six wickets.

South Australia knew they needed early wickets to have any chance of winnings and it was a pitch that made life difficult against the new ball, giving them a strong chance.

They ripped through the Victorians on days four and five, with only Marcus Harris (35 off 92) and Peter Handscomb (28 off 60) showing any fight.

Ollie Peake and Will Sutherland were quickly removed on day five, before O’Neill was bowled by Thornton to wrap things up as celebrations began.

There was a moment of hesitation as the third umpire checked for a near front-foot no-ball, but it was quickly waved away and the celebrations began.

“It’s all gone horribly wrong for Victoria today,” former Australian wicket keeper Adam Crosthwaite said on the coverage.

“South Australia has been brilliant this morning.”

Scott Boland bowled well for Victoria overall, taking five wickets, while Sutherland took six.

Thornton and McAndrew took six apiece for South Australia, while Liam Scott finished with five wickets.

Former Australian bowling star Ryan Harris has also now won successive Sheffield Shields in his first two seasons as coach.
