(ABC News: Rani Fletcher)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Some politicians, including the Tasmanian Greens and independent MP Helen Burnett, have welcomed the state government&#8217;s fare-free initiative, but say more bus routes need to be made available for it to be effective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The government said bus usage had gone up by 20 per cent in the last week, even before the fare-free period began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Commuters will still have to pay for the SkyBus and the Bruny Island ferry.<\/p>\n<p>Minister spruiks benefits to older Tasmanians<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tasmania&#8217;s Minister for Ageing, Bridget Archer, said older Tasmanians who could not longer drive themselves would also benefit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We know how important it is for older Tasmanians to be able to participate in our community, to be able to get to their appointments, to go and do their shopping,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In some cases, they are no longer driving or travelling with their own transport, and so bus transport is really critical for this cohort of people as well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a really important initiative to help with the cost of living.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Brigid Wilkinson, from Council on the Ageing, has welcomed the announcement, saying it will encourage more seniors to &#8220;get out and about&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not just the cost of petrol, it&#8217;s the parking, and the accessibility and ease of getting around the community,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>States chart their own course<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A silhouette of several passengers against ferry windows with the River Derwent and Hobart suburbs in the background.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/26bb1c900cba0221e2248c81226d8ece.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ferry services along the River Derwent in Hobart will also be free.
