There\u2019s arguably no Aussie artist better placed than Kylie Minogue to please generations of footy fans young and old, with the national treasure\u2019s appointment as this year\u2019s AFL grand final entertainment act already proving a crowd-pleaser.<\/p>\n

On Monday morning, news of the pop princess\u2019 billing sent her fans (also known as Lovers) into a frenzy, and copped minimal pushback from footy tragics.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot ideal to have AFL in the middle of a Kylie concert, but I\u2019ll take it,\u201d one fan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s so sweet of Kylie to let them play their little game during her concert,\u201d another teased.<\/p>\n

Even fellow musicians were throwing their support behind the 57-year-old.<\/p>\n

G Flip \u2014 a half-time performer at the 2022 grand final \u2014 hailed the news \u201cSoooo exciting\u201d and \u201cHUGE\u201d.<\/p>\n

Some fans also suggested the high-profile stage had been screaming out for more Aussie headliners in recent years.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt last the AFL comes to its senses and picks Aussie talent and promotes Aust \ud83d\udc95 let\u2019s continue to promote local talent,\u201d one person wrote.<\/p>\n

Another said Kylie\u2019s billing was \u201cthe BEST decision the AFL has made in a long time\u201d.<\/p>\n

The League\u2019s perennial challenge is to book an artist or collective with global star power and acute Australian appeal worthy of uniting 100,000 MCG fans and viewers at home.<\/p>\n

Last year, hip hop icon Snoop Dog\u2019s highly controversial booking drew widespread criticism over the star\u2019s historic promotion of misogyny and homophobia through his music.<\/p>\n

American songstress Katy Perry was largely well-received as the headliner in 2024, with enduring rockers Kiss called up in 2023, and Robbie Williams entertaining the masses in 2022.<\/p>\n

The last instance a collective of Aussie artists shared the stage as the main event was in 2021, as Eskimo Joe, Stella Donnelly, INXS, and Baker Boy put on a show \u2014 with the latter even performing a cover of Kylie\u2019s Can\u2019t Get You Out of My Head.<\/p>\n

Though it must be said, that year the AFL\u2019s hand had been forced by COVID, holding the event at Optus Stadium due to much of the country, and major global acts, restricted access into and around the nation.<\/p>\n

Kylie \u2014 who remains a worthy headliner on any global stage \u2014 relayed her pride in performing at the game\u2019s spiritual home.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a Melburnian, I\u2019m so excited to be coming home for the biggest day in the Aussie sporting calendar,\u201d Minogue said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll not only be performing, but I\u2019ll be one of 100,000 fans at the \u2018G, watching the wonder that is footy.\u201d<\/p>\n

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon said the appointment was a major coup for his team, and a greater win for the footy public.<\/p>\n

\u201cKylie has been on our wish list for a long time, and there is no better artist to headline the performance prior to our biggest game of the season,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur AFL team recently joined Kylie at the MCG for the Grand Final content shoot, and you could already feel the excitement for September building.\u201d<\/p>\n

The AFL also confirmed the traditional 2.30pm bounce down timeslot would remain for at least the next two years.<\/p>\n
