The ABC has projected One Nation has won the seat of MacKillop, in South Australia’s south-east, its third in the state’s lower house.

The seat was traditionally one of the Liberal Party’s safest seats in the state, but was won by One Nation’s Jason Virgo.

Mr Virgo is a City of Mount Gambier councillor and has previously worked in the security industry and in the immigration detention system on Christmas Island.

After a tight race, the Liberal candidate Rebekah Rosser conceded defeat this morning.

“This was a close result and I want to sincerely thank everyone who voted whether you supported me or not,” she said in a social media post.

“Our level of engagement reflects a community that cares deeply about its future.”

Speaking later to ABC South East SA, Ms Rosser said Mr Virgo was “the candidate the voters have chosen”.

“I think we can all agree unanimously that the Liberal Party hasn’t covered itself in glory in the past four years,” she said.

“I am very confident in the leadership of Ashton Hurn and I was very much wanting MacKillop to be a part of the next echelon of the Liberal Party.

“I thought we have a lot to contribute, we have brilliant ideas, we have entrepreneurial skill.”

MacKillop had been held by Liberal-turned-independent Nick McBride, who is currently sitting fourth on first preferences, behind Labor’s Mark Braes in third.

Mr McBride is facing charges of assault against his wife. He has continuously maintained his innocence.

One seat remains in doubt, Narungga on the state’s Yorke Peninsula, where One Nation is ahead.
