But large, for-profit health care companies have not been driving that job growth.<\/p>\n<p>Some parts of health care \u2014 notably, health insurers \u2014 are cutting jobs, some of which has not been previously reported. And considering the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress signed off on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/07\/03\/trump-tax-cut-bill-changes-for-health-care-medicaid-cuts-aca-obamacare-hsa-rural-health-hospitals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">billions of dollars in Medicaid cuts<\/a> in the near future, economists think it\u2019s possible some organizations \u2014 particularly hospitals and others that actually deliver care \u2014 will lay off employees.<\/p>\n<p>To understand how the health industry workforce is changing, STAT analyzed the number of employees listed in the annual filings of 50 of the largest publicly traded health care companies. They include hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, medical device firms, health insurers, distributors, and other life sciences and equipment manufacturers.
