Taylor Swift, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s fianc\u00e9e, is getting sued.<\/p>\n

Travis Kelce<\/a> and Taylor Swift are having one epic offseason. In addition to Kelce returning to the Kansas City Chiefs<\/a> for a 14th season, Swift continues to reap the success of her record-breaking album, \u201cThe Life of a Showgirl.\u201d<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve enjoyed private ski vacations away from the paparazzi, date nights everywhere from New York City to Los Angeles, and quietly hit the most exclusive Oscar after-parties<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Most recently, Swift and Kelce attended their first awards ceremony<\/a> together, stealing the spotlight at the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards, where the pop star walked away with seven trophies.<\/p>\n

All of this is happening while the famous couple plans their upcoming nuptials, expected to be the wedding of the century. While there\u2019s a lot to celebrate, Swift hit yet another legal road bump when it comes to her latest album.<\/p>\n

Taylor Swift Is Getting Sued by Real-Life \u2018Showgirl\u2019 Maren Wade<\/p>\n

Maren Wade registered a trademark for \u201cConfessions of a Showgirl\u201d in 2015 and filed a lawsuit<\/a> against Swift on March 30, as she claims \u201cThe Life of a Showgirl\u201d is too similar.<\/p>\n

Wade started using the \u201cConfessions of a Showgirl\u201d title as a writer for Las Vegas Weekly in 2014 before embarking on a national tour, and using it for a book, podcast, and video content.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit states, \u201cThe result is textbook reverse confusion: a junior user\u2019s overwhelming commercial presence drowns out the senior user\u2019s mark, until consumers begin to assume that the original is the imitation. What Plaintiff had built over twelve years, Defendants threatened to swallow in weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Swift has protection for the album title and music under the right to creative expression, \u201cit does not immunize Defendants\u2019 separate decision to adopt a confusingly similar designation as a trademark, affix it to goods, and deploy it as a source identifier in commerce.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gerben Law believes Wade faces an uphill battle. Josh Gerben Esq. surmised<\/a>, \u201cReverse confusion cases are notoriously difficult (and expensive) to prove. Wade would need to show not just that the marks are similar, but that Swift\u2019s use is actually causing confusion in the marketplace. This is something that typically requires substantial evidence, expert testimony, and expensive discovery to prove. Typically, getting a case like this to trial with strong expert testimony and evidence can easily cost $500K+.\u201d<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s likely to happen? \u201cIn practice, cases like this are often resolved before trial. This is because a settlement can be helpful to both sides.\u2028From Wade\u2019s perspective, she may have difficulty paying the legal and expert fees needed to make a strong case.\u2028\u2028And from Swift\u2019s perspective, a settlement avoids the risk of an adverse verdict.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Wade calls out Swift and her legal team for having \u201cover 170 active and pending trademark registrations,\u201d and therefore, knowing the type of harm this would cause her, she likes to use the songwriter\u2019s music in her Instagram videos.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office Suspended Taylor Swift\u2019s \u2018Life of a Showgirl\u2019 Trademark<\/p>\n

Before Wade\u2019s lawsuit, Swift hit a roadblock after TAS Rights Management, LLC, tried to register \u201cThe Life of a Showgirl\u201d with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).<\/p>\n

The USTPO issued a suspension notice<\/a> due to Wade\u2019s preexisting trademark registration for \u201cConfessions of a Showgirl.\u201d However, the USTPO must first determine the pending application for the fragrance \u201cShowgirl\u201d by Harlem Brands, which filed for a trademark before Swift in December 2024.<\/p>\n

Swift drew inspiration for her 12th studio album, \u201cThe Life of a Showgirl,\u201d while traveling the globe during the \u201cEras Tour\u201d amid her romance with Kelce. The album made history, selling 4.002 million units in its opening-week debut. The first single, \u201cThe Fate of Ophelia,\u201d spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.<\/p>\n
