Ta\u00e7on<\/p>\n<p>Multi-generational connection to Tasmanian tigers<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There&#8217;s still a wealth of Indigenous information about the species that isn&#8217;t widely known.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Griffith University&#8217;s project involves working with Traditional Owners to document the species&#8217; cultural and scientific significance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Co-author Dr Andrea Jalandoni noted that the paintings had been retouched multiple times, indicating they held significance for multiple generations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThese depictions show that the thylacine held a meaningful place in everyday life and local knowledge long before it went extinct,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Djalama man and co-author of the study, Joey Nganjmirra, explained the animals were important to his ancestors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThey used to tell stories about going hunting with thylacines,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Referred to as the djanggerrk in the Kunwinjku language, the tigers played a cultural role as protectors during stream crossings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In the mid-1800s, Indigenous groups in Tasmania also told European settlers about the marsupial\u2019s incredible swimming ability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s believed tigers were more culturally important than devils on the mainland, because there had previously only been 150 tiger images documented, versus just 23 of devils.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Left: Close up of Joey Nganjmirra inside a cave holding a tablet and looking at rock art.
