{"id":575561,"date":"2026-03-31T04:07:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T04:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/575561\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T04:07:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T04:07:14","slug":"republicans-flirt-with-health-care-cuts-to-fund-iran-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/575561\/","title":{"rendered":"Republicans Flirt With Health Care Cuts to Fund Iran War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs Donald Trump and Republicans scramble to find funds for an illegal, unpopular war that has spiraled out of their control, they are once again eying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/health-care\/\" id=\"auto-tag_health-care\" data-tag=\"health-care\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">health care<\/a> funding as a potential target for spending cuts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLast week, Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Brendan_Duke\/status\/2037171792951889968\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that House Budget Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/jodey-arrington\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jodey-arrington\" data-tag=\"jodey-arrington\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jodey Arrington<\/a> (R-Texas) has floated the possibility of adding additional defense spending to an upcoming reconciliation bill, and offsetting the increase through cuts to \u201cstate and social programs.\u201d The Pentagon is seeking\u00a0 $200 billion from Congress to pay for the ongoing American-Israel war against Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAxios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/03\/30\/gop-health-care-pay-iran-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed the report<\/a> on Monday. \u201cThere\u2019s other items we\u2019re looking at right now, especially in the areas of fraud and waste and abuse that we\u2019re working through with our members,\u201d House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) told the publication, invoking the sort of language Republicans have used in the past to justify their attacks on health care funding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe so-called Big Beautiful Bill that Republicans passed last year\u00a0 cut over $1 trillion from Medicaid and health care spending, and is expected to cost millions their health insurance. Trump and the GOP claimed the legislation\u2019s cuts to Medicaid and other social safety net programs were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/republicans-lying-cuts-medicaid-1235352465\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in service of getting rid of \u201cfraud\u201d<\/a> from government spending. In reality, most adults receiving Medicaid already work, fraud is rare, and most Medicaid fraud that does take place is <a href=\"https:\/\/ccf.georgetown.edu\/2025\/01\/10\/the-truth-about-fraud-against-medicaid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">committed by providers<\/a>, not the individuals who were ultimately kicked off of their plans. Republicans in Congress also last year allowed enhanced health care subsidies for health care plans purchased through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/24\/aca-enhanced-subsidy-expiration-effects.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to expire<\/a>, causing premiums to expire and millions more to lose health care.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRepublicans are once again planning to target financial assistance for ACA plans. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/affordable-care-act\/explaining-cost-sharing-reductions-and-silver-loading-in-aca-marketplaces\/#:~:text=The%20House%20of%20Representatives%20recently,cost%2Dsharing%20reductions%E2%80%9D).\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an assessment<\/a> by the Congressional Budget Office last year, when a similar move to target cost-sharing reductions was considered but ultimately left off the table, the cuts now being proposed would result in an additional 300,000 Americans losing health care coverage, and an increase in out of pocket costs for some ACA plan holders. That\u2019s on top of the 14 million Americans already expected to lose coverage by 2030 as a result of the Big Beautiful Bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRep. Arrington\u2019s office did not immediately respond to a request or comment from Rolling Stone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDespite hardline Republicans\u2019 push to make good on the Department of Defense\u2019s request, additional funding for armed conflict with Iran is not universally popular within the GOP.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m not for the war, and so I\u2019m not for funding more of the war,\u201d Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ms.now\/news\/republicans-already-fighting-trump-200-billion-war-supplemental\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told MS NOW<\/a>. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) has publicly stated she is a \u201cno\u201d vote to any supplemental aid for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/iran-war\/\" id=\"auto-tag_iran-war\" data-tag=\"iran-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran war<\/a>. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) said he would need to see the administration <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/03\/20\/republican-democrat-lawmakers-condemn-pentagon-iran-war-funding-request\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">articulate clear goals<\/a> for the conflict before authorizing a \u201cblank check.\u201d Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) echoed similar concerns. \u201cIt begs the question, how long do they plan to be there? What are the goals? Is this the first $200 billion? Does this turn into a trillion?\u201d he said in an interview with CNN.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe war against Iran is widely unpopular, with over 60 percent of the country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/sen-rand-paul-confrontation-trump-senate-gop-iran-strikes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disapproving of the conflict<\/a>. That number is expected to increase as the economic fallout from the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz ripples across domestic and international markets. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2026\/03\/28\/trump-iran-ground-troops-marines\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">possibility<\/a> that Trump might outright deploy American service members for an on-the-ground invasion of Iran is also unlikely to boost his numbers.
