{"id":575746,"date":"2026-03-31T06:26:22","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T06:26:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/575746\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T06:26:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T06:26:22","slug":"australian-water-polo-star-switches-allegiances-to-croatia-ahead-of-world-cup-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/575746\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian water polo star switches allegiances to Croatia ahead of World Cup campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australia&#8217;s men&#8217;s water polo team have suffered a major blow, with left-handed shooter Luke Pavillard switching his national allegiances to Croatia just months out from Sydney hosting the World Cup finals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 30-year-old, who was born in Kalgoorlie, WA, has Croatian ancestry through his grandparents and will reportedly join Croatian side Mladost Zagreb from his current club, Italian giants Pro Recco, to begin his 12-month residency requirement as mandated by World Aquatics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Water polo is enormously popular in Croatia, with Mladost one of Croatia&#8217;s most successful clubs, winning 11 national titles since 1991 \u2014 plus six Yugoslav crowns \u2014 and are seven-time European champions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Naturally we are disappointed to lose Luke from our Aussie Sharks squad,&#8221; Water Polo Australia performance manager Andrew Pratley said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Luke is a great player and has provided a significant contribution to our national program. Whilst disappointed, we wish him well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 200cm-tall left-hander played a key role for the Aussie Sharks at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-07-30\/sport-paris-olympic-games-water-polo-vs-serbia\/104161992\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104161992\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scoring four goals in the stunning 8-3 upset victory over defending and eventual champions, Serbia<\/a>, in the group stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Sharks also shocked perennial medal challengers Hungary 9-8 to finish second in their pool and reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2012.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Luke Pavillard celebrates with teammates\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/4d6934a7cd426dc2b217bc2b157e5a65.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Aussie Sharks reached the Olympic quarter-finals for the first time since 2012 in Paris. (Getty Images: Clive Rose)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, that is where the journey ended as the Sharks fell to a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat against the USA in the quarter-finals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Croatia, the three-time world champions, lost 13-11 to arch-rivals Serbia in the final to claim the silver medal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Pavillard&#8217;s switch is undoubtedly disappointing, however, Water Polo Australia is taking a small amount of solace in the fact its development pathways produced such sought-after talent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Western Australian played with Melville in southern Perth and in the domestic National Water Polo League for the Fremantle Mariners before stints in the USA and with Sydney University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re obviously bitterly disappointed,&#8221; Water Polo Australia chief executive Tim Welsford \u00a0told ABC Sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s one that we&#8217;re still grappling with in terms of the impact on the group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But your point is a good one. I know that even by extension, there are some people in our coaching community who feel a bit torn about this one because they feel like they&#8217;ve put such great time and energy into developing an amazing player that&#8217;s now going to go and play against us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So your silver lining is appropriate in that we can rest assured knowing that we&#8217;ve played some role in developing an amazing world-class player.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The recognition there is that we can produce them and we&#8217;ll go to work again on producing another collection of great left-handers that we&#8217;ll work our way through and find out what the best fit is for us moving forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Luke Pavillard looks dejected\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/fb09d80bcdcaebd549f1385edb7e15b5.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Luke Pavillard played at the Paris Olympics. (Getty Images: Quinn Rooney)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">ABC Sport understands that there was frustration among the playing group that the news had leaked in some overseas outlets, but Welsford said it was a tough situation for all parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We were a little frustrated with the way that the communications came out,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We were trying to have really open, honest, transparent conversations with him, and that was difficult for a number of reasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We felt like we were still inside with a chance of retaining him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;These circumstances are really difficult and I know Luke was doing his best to manage it at his end as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Pavillard is not the only player to have switched nationalities, with Olympic silver medallists Croatia previously recruiting other left-handed attackers Xavi Garcia \u2014 a 2009 world champion with Spain \u2014 in 2016, and former Russian international Konstantin Kharkov in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Left-handed players are a valuable commodity in elite water polo, allowing teams to carry a goal threat with a favourable angle from both sides of the pool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">World Aquatics updated its nationality change rules in March 2025, reducing the required waiting period from three years to 12 months of uninterrupted residency in the athlete&#8217;s new nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This returned the eligibility period back to a year, after it had been extended to three years in 2023, and includes stipulations that the athlete observes a waiting period of 12 months between representation for their old and new country and have &#8220;a genuine, close and established link to the country&#8221; they are set to represent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Luke Pavillard sits in the stands\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/f456d191bf1e2995ae0cab4ff201f8f1.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Luke Pavillard was injured and unable to play during the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.\u00a0 (Getty Images: Marcel ter Bals\/DeFodi Images\/Albert ten Hove)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When you&#8217;re involved in a global sport \u2014 and the world is so much smaller now than it once was \u2014 there&#8217;s a number of athletes that are taking this opportunity on the back of the change in World Aquatics&#8217; rules around nationality,&#8221; Welsford said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That there has been a significant shift in the way that countries are structuring up and the targets that they&#8217;re putting on talent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s much, much easier to recruit a player and host them for 12 months and change their nationality than it is to develop one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And so for short-term gain, this is something that I think we&#8217;re seeing in global water polo at the moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve been the recipients of talent in the past as well so I don&#8217;t think we can throw stones at that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We would have loved the opportunity to take Luke through to LA though, that&#8217;s for sure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Sharks have just flown out to prepare for the World Aquatics Water Polo World Cup Division 2 competition in Malta, from April 7-13, ahead of Australia hosting the 2026 World Cup finals in Sydney between July 22 and 26.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radio\/programs\/abc-sport-daily\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABC Sport Daily podcast<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">ABC Sport Daily is your daily sports conversation.
