It reflects a preventable and persistent public safety failure that demands immediate and decisive action.

While official data indicate that drink driving contributes to less than 0.5% of fatal road accidents in Malaysia, the MMA stresses that even one preventable death is unacceptable. Each case represents the irreversible loss of a life, and the devastation of a family.

There is also growing concern over drivers operating vehicles under the influence of drugs — whether illicit substances or certain medications — which similarly impair judgement, coordination, and reaction time.

Evidence from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) shows that a drunk driver is 13 times more likely to cause a crash. This risk is further compounded when alcohol and drugs are used concurrently, making DUI not a marginal issue, but a clear and avoidable threat to public safety.

Offenders punished, but who protects the family?

Malaysia has taken important steps to strengthen penalties under the amended Road Transport Act 2020, with offenders facing imprisonment and substantial fines.

However, a critical gap remains. The financial penalties imposed on offenders do not directly support the families of victims. Families who lose a breadwinner are often left to navigate complex legal processes, prolonged insurance disputes, and significant financial hardship, frequently without adequate support.

Malaysia currently lacks a dedicated compensation mechanism for victims of DUI, whether involving alcohol or drugs. As a result, families are effectively failed twice — first by the incident, and then by the system meant to deliver justice.

The MMA considers this unacceptable and in urgent need of reform.

Call for decisive national action

The MMA calls on the Government to take decisive and immediate action to address this preventable threat. Enforcement must be strengthened through sustained, year-round Ops Mabuk with unpredictable and high-visibility roadblocks, including routine screening for both alcohol and drugs, while systemic reforms are urgently needed, including the establishment of a dedicated DUI Victim Compensation Fund to provide timely financial support to affected families and mandatory legal aid to ensure equitable access to justice.

Preventive measures must also be enhanced by lowering the permissible blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit in line with WHO recommendations, mandating rehabilitation programmes for offenders, and implementing continuous nationwide public education campaigns that emphasise the dangers of DUI in all its forms. DUI is not a seasonal issue but a persistent national risk that requires a comprehensive and coordinated response.

The MMA extends its deepest condolences to the family affected by the Klang tragedy, and to all families across Malaysia who have suffered irreplaceable losses due to DUI involving alcohol and drugs.

Justice must not stop at punishment. It must extend to protection, support, and dignity for the families left behind. – March 30, 2026

The above statement is by Datuk Dr Thirunavukarasu Rajoo, President of the Malaysian Medical Association.

THE Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) strongly condemns the recent rise in Driving Under the Influence (DUI) incidents involving…

[570
64,63,34155,136229,264033,786,282413,785,282414,85
0":"post-575834","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-mma","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-drink-driving","11":"tag-driving-under-the-influence","12":"tag-dui","13":"tag-fighting","14":"tag-klang-fatal-accident","15":"tag-mma","16":"tag-motorcyclist-death","17":"tag-sports
["GET
