Team selection is set to determine whether overlooked Hawthorn key forward Calsher Dear assesses his opportunities elsewhere this October. <\/p>\n
That\u2019s according to the Herald Sun\u2019s Josh Barnes, who reports \u201crivals are keeping close tabs on Dear\u201d. <\/p>\n
The out-of-contract Dear played just nine senior games last year after 17 in his rookie season, and he hasn\u2019t yet received an AFL opportunity this year as Sam Mitchell opts for Mabior Chol and Mitch Lewis next to Jack Gunston. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re a fascinating watch with that mould at the moment, they\u2019ve got four guys, and only three of them are ever going to play at one time,\u201d Corbin Middlemas said on Fox Footy\u2019s Midweek Tackle. <\/p>\n
Jon Ralph added: \u201cHe\u2019s not in great form. He\u2019s really early in his career \u2014 get a kick, and I\u2019m sure he\u2019ll be really quickly back into that senior team.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the preseason, Sam Mitchell explained why Dear started the year on the outer. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe probably hasn\u2019t quite been at his best. We\u2019ve got quite a few tools in the front half, and we\u2019re looking at trying to get the mix right,\u201d Mitchell said prior to Opening Round. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s just down a little bit of confidence, just currently. He\u2019s obviously been a little bit limited with his pre-season.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gold Coast\u2019s Ben King is the big name in the free agency market this year, but Dear is another long-term asset rival clubs will be all over if he\u2019s in fact open to leaving Dingley. <\/p>\n

After being involved in trade speculation at the end of last season, the much-improved Buku Khamis\u2019 management is reportedly in talks with the Bulldogs over a long-term extension. <\/p>\n
A huge part of the Dogs\u2019 defensive revolution to start this season as a one-on-one stopper, Khamis is a restricted free agent this year after requesting a trade to Carlton last October. <\/p>\n
\u201c(He\u2019s) not quite ready to sign the new deal that\u2019s been tabled in front of him, and why would you? Jack Silvagni went from bits-parts player to $850,000-a-year from Carlton to St Kilda,\u201d Jon Ralph said on Fox Footy\u2019s Midweek Tackle. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not doing a Silvagni-going-to-St Kilda, but he\u2019s doing what he should do \u2014 ratchet up the price a bit, and then sign a new long-term deal as an unrestricted free agent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could play him back, you can move him forward. He\u2019s such a flexible guy, and now it\u2019s really on his terms should he want to go. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd likewise, if the Bulldogs want to keep him, they\u2019re going to have to try and squeeze him in \u2014 and they\u2019ve got a lot of good players they\u2019re paying.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, at the Kennel, the Bulldogs are thought to be keen on bumping up Sam Darcy\u2019s current contract, with the young superstar signed through 2029. <\/p>\n
\u201cHis current salary is less than $1 million; he signed it after his third year, he kicked 38 goals \u2014 he wasn\u2019t the best forward in the game then,\u201d Ralph said. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd so, that right now is not poorly paid, but it\u2019s not amazing. So, the Dogs are very much open over the next year or two to expanding that contract. <\/p>\n
