Police have charged a man with murder following the discovery of burning human remains on a rural property west of Cairns in late March.<\/p>\n

Police allege a 37-year-old killed and set fire to the body of a 70-year-old man, with whom he lived on a rural property at Dimbulah, about 100 kilometres west of Cairns.<\/p>\n

The 37-year-old man has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court today, charged with one count each of murder and misconduct with a corpse by interference.<\/p>\n

Both are domestic violence offences.<\/p>\n

Police say they found human remains in the yard of the property on Stock Road after they were called there for a welfare check about 8pm on March 24.<\/p>\n

“There was a fire burning on that property [when officers arrived], and police saw what they thought was human remains,” Detective Inspector Jason Chetham said.<\/p>\n

“They took immediate action to attempt to recover them and to extinguish that fire.”\"Two<\/p>\n

Detective Inspector Chetham said police would allege the man was burnt after he was killed.<\/p>\n

However, he declined to reveal details of preliminary results from an autopsy.<\/p>\n

“It’s certainly one of the more confronting [scenes] I’ve heard of and obviously I’ve seen the images from there,” he said.Men ‘related through marriage’<\/p>\n

Detective Inspector Chetham said the men lived together at the property and allegedly had an argument on the evening of March 23.<\/p>\n

“What happened exactly during that altercation and what led to the 70-year-old man’s death is still part of an ongoing investigation,’ he said.<\/p>\n

The men were “related through marriage”, he said, and no-one else lived at the property.<\/p>\n

Evidence markers and police tape were placed in a shed, while other officers examined the inside of the house.<\/p>\n

The remote property is bordered by the Burke Developmental Road, with nuts and tropical fruit grown on farms in the surrounding area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Detective Inspector Chetham urged anyone with information to come forward.<\/p>\n
