Graceland turned into the Heartbreak Hotel after John Mulaney<\/a> had to break some bad news to his Elvis Presley<\/a> superfan son, Malcolm. <\/p>\n

The John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch star revealed that he had to inform his 4-year-old son, whom he shares with wife Olivia Munn<\/a>, that the King of Rock and Roll was dead while they were on a recent tour of Graceland.<\/p>\n

\u201cMalcolm, my son, is 4, but he\u2019s a huge Elvis fan,\u201d Mulaney explained on Monday’s episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert<\/a>. \u201cAnd I said to him, \u2018Do you want to get a tour of Elvis\u2019 house?\u2019 And he was like, \u2018Elvis\u2019 house? Awesome.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The father-son duo embarked on a private tour of Presley’s estate that evening.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re walking through, [the guide] goes, \u2018We\u2019re gonna show you some special spots because you\u2019re performing here at Graceland,\u2019\u201d Mulaney remembered. \u201cMy son goes, \u2018I want to go on the roof.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

While they weren\u2019t able to visit the roof, the pair were able to visit the singer’s famous jungle room.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re looking around and Malcolm goes, \u2018Dad, can I meet Elvis now?\u2019\u201d Mulaney recalled. \u201cIt had never come up while listening to \u2018Hound Dog.\u2019 You don\u2019t go, \u2018Son, you know this guy\u2019s dead, right?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, “Then I realized all his grandparents are alive and he\u2019s never had a goldfish. And he doesn\u2019t know\u2026 and he\u2019s about to find out in the jungle room at Graceland that everybody dies.”<\/p>\n

So Mulaney had to explain to his son why he couldn\u2019t meet his idol.\u00a0\u201cI said, \u2018Elvis is in heaven now.\u2019 And he said, \u2018Why?\u2019\u201d he recalled. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018Uh, well, sometimes when people are in their early 40s, and they have a job and schedule a lot like Daddy, and some of the same issues as Daddy, they go to the bathroom and they go to heaven.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

When a laughing Stephen Colbert acknowledged that there were worse ways to die, Mulaney responded, \u201cDude, what better life?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mulaney previously revealed that Malcolm is such a big fan of the King that his third birthday party was Elvis-themed.\u00a0\u201cHe\u2019s a really big Elvis fan,\u201d Mulaney explained while visiting The Tonight Show<\/a> in 2024. \u201cI think it started with Lilo & Stitch, because they listen to Elvis in that movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

But watching Presley’s 1968 comeback special was what really sealed the deal. \u201cMy son, 2 years old, was riveted,\u201d he said. \u201cMore than any Inside Out, Moana, anything. Staring at Elvis in a leather suit in the late ’60s.\u201d<\/p>\n
