McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella believes Oscar Piastri\u2019s impressive podium at the Japanese Grand Prix was one of his best.<\/p>\n

It was worth the wait to go racing in 2026 for Piastri as he powered his McLaren to second place in Suzuka.<\/p>\n

But for many, it was a drive deserving of more as the Australian star enjoyed a dream start to snatch the lead from the dominant Mercedes and controlled the opening stages.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, a promising shot at victory was denied by an unluckily timed Safety Car, which allowed Kimi Antonelli to shoot to the lead.<\/p>\n

Given it was his first Grand Prix of the year, having not made the start at Australia or China, it was one of Piastri\u2019s most impressive drives of his growing career.<\/p>\n

\u201cOscar delivered a superb drive after a great start with strong pace, fully deserving of his podium,\u201d Stella said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite missing the first two Grands Prix starts, he is showing the strongest version of himself since he started to compete in Formula 1 \u2013 calm, resilient and inspirational for the whole team.\u201d<\/p>\n

McLaren appeared to take a significant leap forward in Suzuka and showcase a lot more pace than previously seen in 2026, with some even suggesting the reigning champions have overtaken Ferrari as Mercedes\u2019 nearest rival.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a good weekend that allows us to leave Suzuka encouraged. The speed we showed in Qualifying was confirmed in the race, and we were genuinely able to fight with Ferrari and, at times, Mercedes,\u201d Stella said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur race execution, the starts, the strategy, and how we exploited the power unit, was strong.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we are encouraged by this result, our objective remains clear: we must improve the fundamental performance of our chassis.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe characteristics of this circuit and the strong performance from our power unit played to our advantage, but we know our rivals still have an edge in cornering grip.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are aware we need a few tenths from the chassis to be able to contend for victories consistently.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is now our responsibility to provide both Oscar and Lando with a car that can consistently challenge for wins, and we are focused on bringing the necessary upgrades in the upcoming races to achieve that.\u201d<\/p>\n
