On Monday night, Channel Seven commentators Caroline Wilson and Kane Cornes took aim at the 242-game premiership coach\u2019s role at Princes Park. <\/p>\n
\u201cI hate to blame the part-timers, but I\u2019m not a fan of part-timers at footy clubs, and one of them is Adam Simpson \u2026 how does it work that he\u2019s a part-time mentor at Carlton, and talking about (them) on that show, when he\u2019s there to fix that problem?\u201d Wilson said. <\/p>\n
Cornes added: \u201cIn all my time in football, I\u2019ve never seen a part-timer have great success \u2026 the problem for Adam is you\u2019re not getting his best as a media performer, because he\u2019s not speaking honestly about the club \u2026 and they\u2019re probably not getting the best of him at Carlton, because he\u2019s not there full-time.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Wednesday night, AFL 360 co-host Garry Lyon put the topic to Simpson. <\/p>\n
\u201cInevitably, you would be linked with a potential senior coaching job if things started to go pear-shaped \u2026 and as was predicted, during the week, your name was thrown and bandied around,\u201d Lyon said on Fox Footy. <\/p>\n
\u201cWould you have an interest in coaching Carlton if and when this job arrived?\u201d<\/p>\n
Simpson then explained the specifications of his role, and even delivered a cheeky jab at the false notion that there aren\u2019t any footy media performers who also work in clubland. <\/p>\n
\u201cI really enjoy the role. And it\u2019s not a part-time role, I\u2019m a consultant there, and I work on development plans with the assistant coaches and Vossy,\u201d Simpson clarified on Fox Footy\u2019s AFL 360. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not part of the groupthink, so if I see something, I\u2019ll flick (Voss) a text or a bit of vision about \u2018this is what I\u2019m seeing\u2019, and I\u2019m someone who\u2019s been there before. That\u2019s the role. <\/p>\n
\u201cI haven\u2019t been at the club since you guys saw me at a Geelong scratch match. So, I\u2019m off-site a little bit; the role is the role. <\/p>\n
\u201cBut when I went into it, I was very clear with my manager and with Graham Wright (Carlton CEO) that if I take this role, I\u2019m not coaching Carlton. Because there\u2019s no way you can do both. <\/p>\n
\u201cFor right now, I\u2019m part of Michael\u2019s team. So, I\u2019m not interested in anything other than trying to help Carlton in my very small role \u2014 which, apparently you can\u2019t have two roles; no one in the media works at footy clubs, by the way \u2026<\/p>\n
\u201cThis particular role, I made a really clear decision \u2014 if I ever wanted to coach Carlton, I wouldn\u2019t take this role. I\u2019m here to try and support the current coach, not try and manipulate my way through \u2014 that would be a shocking look.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2018 premiership mentor said he hadn\u2019t felt the need to talk through the situation with Voss, explaining that the dynamic wasn\u2019t even a consideration inside the four walls. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey (the Blues) just want to win this week. The self-importance we carry ourselves in sometimes is just misguided at clubland. They\u2019re not interested in a lot of the things we discuss,\u201d Simpson said. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been criticised for maybe going too hard on the commentary around Carlton, so it\u2019s finding that balance for me in a media point of view is important, but (it\u2019s about) how do they win against North this week? <\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s the number one priority that they\u2019re thinking about; they\u2019re not worried about perception or what\u2019s on the outside.\u201d<\/p>\n
Simpson moved to give more clarity around his duties at the Blues, explaining some of his correspondence with Voss following last Sunday\u2019s capitulation against Melbourne as an example of his duties. <\/p>\n
\u201cI think we\u2019ve just got to be really clear about what the role is, if you\u2019re not part of the groupthink. So, what happened on Sunday night is I texted him (Voss), and we had a chat about \u2018Okay, what do you reckon?\u2019\u201d continued Simpson. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd we\u2019re talking through \u2026 what\u2019s going on in second halves? So, we start looking through it, and I looked at some vision yesterday and gave him a call last night to say \u2018I\u2019m seeing this\u2019, (and he says) \u2018yep, that\u2019s exactly what I saw, thanks for verifying my thought\u2019. <\/p>\n
\u201cSo, the role is based around support, but also not being a part of the groupthink \u2026 so, that\u2019s the role, and then the actual position, it\u2019s really not part of what we\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rounding off the discussion, Simpson declared the idea that he would accept a supporting role at the Blues only to aim to eventually try and take over as senior coach was a \u201cridiculous\u201d conversation. <\/p>\n
