It\u2019s fair to assume, then, that biohacking is an expensive endeavour.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">But, as is often the case, things can become overcomplicated. Johnson may be able to extend his life through these methods, but the extremes don\u2019t justify the effort or cost for most people. Instead, as  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mMyhzoWQxL0&amp;t=155s\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mMyhzoWQxL0&amp;t=155s\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"YouTuber Joe Delaney\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">YouTuber Joe Delaney<\/a> argues in his latest video, there are far simpler and more cost-effective ways to improve your health without spending a fortune.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">He looks at some of the most common biohacking practices to see whether cheaper alternatives can deliver similar benefits.<\/p>\n<p> Cold-Water Immersion (CWI)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a60453376\/ice-bath-health-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a60453376\/ice-bath-health-benefits\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Ice baths\" data-node-id=\"21.0\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ice baths<\/a> and cold plunges can aid recovery and provide a temporary mood boost, but Delaney argues the benefits are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/a65008520\/ice-baths-limited-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/a65008520\/ice-baths-limited-effect\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"often overstated\" data-node-id=\"21.2\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">often overstated<\/a>. They\u2019re not as effective at boosting immunity, improving mood, increasing metabolism or enhancing cognitive function as social media might suggest.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">That said, a simple cold bath can still do the job. Filling your tub with cold water and adding a few ice cubes can offer similar effects to a purpose-built plunge pool or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/a43937198\/lumi-ice-bath\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/a43937198\/lumi-ice-bath\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"expensive at-home system\" data-node-id=\"26.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">expensive at-home system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8216;Filling the bath up is cold enough to get the majority of the benefits,&#8217; Delaney says. &#8216;Despite the hype, it\u2019s still worth doing. Even if some of the claimed benefits aren\u2019t strongly backed by data, you might still feel better for it.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8216;If you had to design a non-invasive way to maximise placebo effect, it would probably look a lot like an ice bath. It\u2019s so physically shocking you can\u2019t help but think, \u201cSurely this is doing something\u201d.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"39\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">He adds that the main difference with more expensive options is convenience, not added benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Heat Therapy<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"44\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Similarly, a hot bath can mimic many of the effects of a  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/a70515834\/post-workout-sauna-health-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/a70515834\/post-workout-sauna-health-benefits\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"sauna\" data-node-id=\"44.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sauna<\/a>. Both expose the body to heat stress, but water can raise core temperature more efficiently because it limits heat dissipation.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"48\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8216;It increases cardiac output more and provides more pronounced and sustained immune and anti-inflammatory effects,&#8217; Delaney says.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Light Blockers<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"53\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Blue light-blocking glasses may have a place, but only once the basics are covered. Limiting blue light exposure can support better  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/a69527567\/sleep-myths-sophie-bostock\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/a69527567\/sleep-myths-sophie-bostock\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"sleep\" data-node-id=\"53.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sleep<\/a>, but factors like stress, diet, exercise,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a62948775\/caffeine-the-new-alcohol\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a62948775\/caffeine-the-new-alcohol\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"caffeine\" data-node-id=\"53.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">caffeine<\/a> intake and environment play a far bigger role.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"57\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Simply wearing blue light glasses won\u2019t fix poor sleep habits. Instead, reducing screen time \u2013 particularly stimulating content like short-form video \u2013 is likely to be more effective.<\/p>\n<p>Red Light Therapy<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"62\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Of all the methods, Delaney is most supportive of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/a63654554\/what-is-red-light-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/a63654554\/what-is-red-light-therapy\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"red light therapy\" data-node-id=\"62.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">red light therapy<\/a> \u2013 but only in specific cases.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"66\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8216;The benefits of red light therapy are actually pretty wild, but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s worthwhile for everyone,&#8217; he says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"70\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It may help with skin quality,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/style\/grooming\/a66100118\/higher-dose-red-light-hat-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/style\/grooming\/a66100118\/higher-dose-red-light-hat-review\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hair growth\" data-node-id=\"70.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hair growth<\/a>, scar reduction, tissue repair and pain management. But if those aren\u2019t concerns, the benefits may be minimal. His advice: only invest if it solves a problem you actually have.<\/p>\n<p>Sleep Tracking<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"75\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/g64901822\/best-sleep-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/g64901822\/best-sleep-tracker\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Sleep trackers\" data-node-id=\"75.0\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sleep trackers<\/a> can provide detailed data, but a simple sleep diary can be just as effective for improving habits.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"79\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8216;Sleep trackers are the most accurate way to measure sleep metrics,&#8217; Delaney says. &#8216;But if the goal is better sleep, they\u2019re not always more effective \u2013 and can sometimes be less helpful \u2013 than keeping a diary.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"83\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8216;The tracker gives you data, but the diary is often better at driving behavioural change. So before buying one, ask yourself: do you want to analyse everything, or just sleep better?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Supplements<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"89\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/g34484109\/best-nootropics\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/g34484109\/best-nootropics\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Nootropics\" data-node-id=\"89.0\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nootropics<\/a> are trending, but Delaney suggests a simpler, more affordable stack \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a65157906\/creatine-super-dose\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a65157906\/creatine-super-dose\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"creatine\" data-node-id=\"89.2\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">creatine<\/a>, caffeine and L-theanine \u2013 can deliver many of the same benefits at a fraction of the cost.<\/p>\n<p>Gut Health<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"95\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Gut microbiome test kits promise personalised insights, but Delaney points out there\u2019s no clear consensus on what an \u2018optimal\u2019 microbiome looks like. Results can also vary significantly, even from the same test.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"101\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Instead, he recommends a simpler approach.
