{"id":581030,"date":"2026-04-02T16:18:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T16:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/581030\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T16:18:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T16:18:09","slug":"matildas-players-join-japan-criticising-inequality-in-prize-money-from-asian-football-confederation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/581030\/","title":{"rendered":"Matildas&#8217; players join Japan criticising &#8216;inequality&#8217; in prize money from Asian Football Confederation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Fierce rivals on the field, the Matildas and Japan have joined forces to slam the Asian Football Confederation&#8217;s prize money for the Women&#8217;s Asian Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Women&#8217;s Asian Cup is the lowest-paying continental tournament in the world, offering $US1.8m ($2.62m) in prize money for the recently concluded edition in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The same amount was up for grabs at the 2022 Women&#8217;s Asian Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In contrast, a total prize pool of $US14.8m ($21.54m) was available for the men&#8217;s Asian Cup in 2023, with each nation receiving a participation fee of $US200,000 ($291,000).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-23\/matildas-womens-asian-cup-grand-plan-needed\/106484046\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matildas need plan for end-of-an-era concerns<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Women&#8217;s Asian Cup has shown that without a grand plan for the future of women&#8217;s football and a willingness to stick to it, the Matildas may never capture an elusive major trophy again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The inequality has become a major sore spot among Matildas players and their Asian rivals given the 2026 Women&#8217;s Asian Cup in Australia was also a resounding success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Japan were crowned winners after defeating Australia 1-0 in the March 21 final in front of 74,397 fans at Stadium Australia in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In total, a record 355,528 fans attended matches across Perth, Gold Coast and Sydney \u2014 making the 2026 tournament the most attended Women&#8217;s Asian Cup in history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the prize money was a pittance compared to the men&#8217;s tournament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Players were quietly seething at the low pay but largely chose to remain silent during the tournament so they could focus on achieving on-field success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">With the tournament now in the rear-view mirror, a statement on behalf of the Matildas and Japanese players was released on Thursday evening to call out the lack of prize money and the ongoing inequality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Despite the success of this tournament, it remains the lowest-paying continental tournament in the world and inequality between the men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s game remains,&#8221; the statement read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Our pre-tournament invitation to the AFC to work together on equal prize money, a guaranteed share to all players, and to co-develop a lasting legacy has so far been ignored.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Although nothing has been locked in as yet, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has previously pledged equal prize money for the 2027 Women&#8217;s World Cup in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radio\/programs\/abc-sport-daily\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABC Sport Daily podcast<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">ABC Sport Daily is your daily sports conversation.
