Boxing, much like life, offers second chances to those willing to fight for them. That was evident on Saturday, March 28, when Cuban contender Yoenis T\u00e9llez overcame adversity to secure one of the most significant wins of his career, defeating Cuban-American Brian Mendoza in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n
The bout, however, was far from easy. A violent head clash caused a nasal injury that led to heavy bleeding, forcing T\u00e9llez to receive nearly five minutes of medical attention. Despite the intense pain\u00a0\u00a0which he later described as a 10 out of 10, he chose to continue. The victory reflected not only his physical preparation, but also his mental toughness.<\/p>\n
Following the fight, T\u00e9llez spoke in the Spanish-language podcast \u201c Ebro x Carlos\u201d hosted by me alongside journalist Jorge Ebro, where he discussed key aspects of the bout, his health status, his motivations, and his future plans.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy trainer asked me how I felt and if I wanted to stop. The decision was mine, but from his expression I understood I had to stay and give everything. We had worked too hard to let this opportunity slip away,\u201d T\u00e9llez said.<\/p>\n
His sense of responsibility extended beyond the ring. After the fight, he delivered a message in support of the Cuban people:<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s no secret the difficult situation our country is facing. I believe every Cuban with a platform should raise their voice and speak without fear.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the fight, adjustments were more emotional than tactical.<\/p>\n
\u201cI knew I could trade and use my tools. Round by round, I showed the judges I was the one who wanted it more,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
Regarding his health, T\u00e9llez provided updates:<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no fracture or nasal deviation. The pain and swelling are still there, but I\u2019m recovering. I\u2019ll take about two weeks off with my family before returning to training.\u201d<\/p>\n
Training in Massachusetts alongside H\u00e9ctor Berm\u00fadez, Mike Veloz, and Lester D\u00edaz, as well as working with fellow Cuban Yoenlis Hern\u00e1ndez, has played a key role in his development:<\/p>\n
\u201cStepping out of my comfort zone and working with new coaches and teammates has brought back my love for boxing and my daily motivation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, T\u00e9llez made his intentions clear:<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to avenge my loss to Baraou, but right now my main goal is to speak with my promoter Amauri Piedra to pursue an IBF title opportunity against Josh Kelly, wherever the fight takes place.\u201d<\/p>\n
Calm and focused, he closed with a simple message:<\/p>\n
