Male octopuses use specialised arm to mate, scientists find | Marine life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sex might seem an intimate act, but scientists have shed fresh light on how octopuses manage it at arm\u2019s length.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Male octopuses use a specialised arm called the hectocotylus to place a package of sperm inside the female\u2019s reproductive system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But how this arm detects a mate, or delivers the sperm to the right location, has remained unclear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Now scientists have found the arm is a sensory organ, similar to a tongue, that can detect the female hormone progesterone. This allows it to seek out and fertilise a mate, even if the male cannot see its sexual partner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Prof Nicholas Bellono, the senior author of the paper at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/harvard-university\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard University<\/a>, is not surprised by the mechanism because octopuses are very solitary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt makes sense that the arm is both the sensor and the mating organ because in these chance encounters, the arm has to be able to both localise the female, localise the oviduct and very quickly initiate the mating or move on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/10.1126\/science.aec9652\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Writing in the journal Science,<\/a> Bellono and colleagues \u2013 including the first author Pablo Villar \u2013 reported how they planned to study how octopuses mate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\" Male octopus extends its specialist arm through a barrier to mate with a female it cannot see \" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/_Male_octopus_extends_its_specialist_arm_through_a_barrier_to_mate_with_a_female_it_cannot_see_--d8f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" class=\"dcr-l300o4\"\/> Male octopus extends its specialist arm through a barrier to mate with a female it cannot see <\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is difficult to do with octopuses, especially octopuses in a laboratory setting, because they\u2019re solitary creatures. They don\u2019t interact very often. And when they do, if they\u2019re both confined to the same tank, they\u2019ll usually fight and often they\u2019ll kill each other,\u201d said Bellono.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The team separated a pair of California two-spot octopuses in a tank using a black, opaque barrier containing holes large enough for their arms to fit through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Bellono said the plan was to allow the octopuses to get to know each other, then remove the barrier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However the team found something unexpected: the male put its specialised arm through one of the holes, found the female, inserted its arm into the female\u2019s mantle \u2013 the sac that contains the octopus\u2019s vital organs \u2013 located the tubes that transport eggs from the ovary, and started to mate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The researchers found the same behaviour occurred when other pairs of male and female octopuses were placed in the same setup, and even occurred in the dark \u2013 supporting the idea the animals were able to copulate without even setting eyes on each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, attempts to mate did not occur when pairs of males were studied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The researchers then explored whether the reproductive organs of the female octopuses were releasing a female-specific cue. Among the substances discovered in the ovaries and skin of females was the hormone progesterone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The team found amputated specialist arms of male octopuses moved when in contact with progesterone \u2013 but not when in contact with other, similar hormones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They then returned to their original setup, separating males and females by a barrier with holes.
