Mercedes joining as power unit supplier<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">In September 2024, Alpine confirmed that their power unit department would <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiY2Vhc2Vfb3BlcmF0aW9uc19saW5rX2NsaWNrZWQiLCJjbGlja1RleHQiOnRydWUsInBhdGgiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5mb3JtdWxhMS5jb20vZW4vbGF0ZXN0L2FydGljbGUvYWxwaW5lLWNvbmZpcm0tdGhleS1hcmUtdG8tc2h1dC1kb3duLXdvcmtzLWVuZ2luZS1wcm9ncmFtbWUtYXQtdGhlLWVuZC1vZi4yQmN1Ym4wM1U4b2FJT01GVmdnWkRsIiwicGF0aFR5cGUiOiJpbnRlcm5hbCJ9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/alpine-confirm-they-are-to-shut-down-works-engine-programme-at-the-end-of.2Bcubn03U8oaIOMFVggZDl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cease operations<\/a> at the end of 2025, with the team\u2019s Viry-Chatillon factory \u2013 which had previously designed and built engines \u2013 instead becoming a \u2018Hypertech Alpine\u2019 centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">This left a vacancy for an engine supplier \u2013 and, amid rumours of talks with <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoibWVyY2VkZXNfbGlua19jbGlja2VkIiwiY2xpY2tUZXh0Ijp0cnVlLCJwYXRoIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZm9ybXVsYTEuY29tL2VuL3RlYW1zL21lcmNlZGVzIiwicGF0aFR5cGUiOiJpbnRlcm5hbCJ9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/teams\/mercedes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mercedes<\/a>, the news followed two months later that <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiYWxwaW5lX3dvdWxkX3J1bl9wb3dlcl91bml0c19mcm9tX3RoZV9zaWx2ZXJfYXJyb3dzX2xpbmtfY2xpY2tlZCIsImNsaWNrVGV4dCI6dHJ1ZSwicGF0aCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmZvcm11bGExLmNvbS9lbi9sYXRlc3QvYXJ0aWNsZS9hbHBpbmUtdG8tdXNlLW1lcmNlZGVzLXBvd2VyLXVuaXRzLWFuZC1nZWFyYm94LWZyb20tMjAyNi41anp6YlFlSHg3YVBUM2hvUDVoUnRjIiwicGF0aFR5cGUiOiJpbnRlcm5hbCJ9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/alpine-to-use-mercedes-power-units-and-gearbox-from-2026.5jzzbQeHx7aPT3hoP5hRtc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alpine would run power units from the Silver Arrows<\/a> as of 2026 until at least the end of 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">The deal also meant that Alpine would use gearboxes from Mercedes for 2026, though sources said that the team intended to build their own from 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">It was a move that former Team Principal Oliver Oakes admitted at the time was a \u201cdifficult decision\u201d, but that it was made to \u201cget the best engine in the back of the car and help the team keep climbing back up the grid\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">With Mercedes previously performing well when the turbo-hybrid era began back in 2014, the German manufacturer appeared confident in their abilities to adapt to the new power unit regulations for 2026, which would see the balance shift to around a 50-50 power split between petrol and electric.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Alpine certainly seemed pleased with the early signs of promise from their new engines during 2026 pre-season testing in Bahrain, with Managing Director Steve Nielsen <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiY29tbWVudGluZ19saW5rX2NsaWNrZWQiLCJjbGlja1RleHQiOnRydWUsInBhdGgiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5mb3JtdWxhMS5jb20vZW4vbGF0ZXN0L2FydGljbGUvYWxwaW5lLWJvb3N0ZWQtYnktbXVjaC1iZXR0ZXItMjAyNi1jYXItYW5kLWJpZy1nYWlucy1mcm9tLW1lcmNlZGVzLXBvd2VyLjFic0toajluMG81cDdsUWZ3VlNFb3MiLCJwYXRoVHlwZSI6ImludGVybmFsIn0=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/alpine-boosted-by-much-better-2026-car-and-big-gains-from-mercedes-power.1bsKhj9n0o5p7lQfwVSEos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">commenting<\/a>: \u201cI think we\u2019re happy with our PU supplier. That\u2019s one area where we\u2019ve definitely made big gains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3. More stability throughout the team<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">The switch to Mercedes power units marked just one of several big developments to occur in the Alpine camp during the last few years, the squad having experienced numerous personnel changes across recent seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">On the driver front, <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiZXN0ZWJhbl9vY29uX2xpbmtfY2xpY2tlZCIsImNsaWNrVGV4dCI6dHJ1ZSwicGF0aCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmZvcm11bGExLmNvbS9lbi9kcml2ZXJzL2VzdGViYW4tb2NvbiIsInBhdGhUeXBlIjoiaW50ZXJuYWwifQ==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/drivers\/esteban-ocon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Esteban Ocon<\/a> left one race earlier than originally planned at the end of 2024, leading to Jack Doohan stepping in prior to joining full-time in 2025. The Australian\u2019s tenure did not last long, however, as he was replaced by <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiZnJhbmNvX2NvbGFwaW50b19saW5rX2NsaWNrZWQiLCJjbGlja1RleHQiOnRydWUsInBhdGgiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5mb3JtdWxhMS5jb20vZW4vZHJpdmVycy9mcmFuY28tY29sYXBpbnRvIiwicGF0aFR5cGUiOiJpbnRlcm5hbCJ9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/drivers\/franco-colapinto\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Franco Colapinto<\/a> after the opening six rounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Meanwhile, Oliver Oakes resigned from the position of Team Principal with immediate effect in May 2025 \u2013 less than one year after joining following the exit of Bruno Famin \u2013 while long-time Renault CEO Luca de Meo left suddenly in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">However, with Briatore rejoining the squad in June 2024 \u2013 and Steve Nielsen also coming onboard as Managing Director last September \u2013 Alpine appear to have found more stable ground, something they have also achieved through maintaining the same driver line-up of Gasly and Colapinto for 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">&#8220;Alpine in the last few years has had no stability,&#8221; Briatore <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\" data-f1rd-a7s-context=\"eyJhY3Rpb25UeXBlIjoiY29uY2VkZWRfdG93YXJkc190aGVfZW5kX29mXzIwMjVfbGlua19jbGlja2VkIiwiY2xpY2tUZXh0Ijp0cnVlLCJwYXRoIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZm9ybXVsYTEuY29tL2VuL2xhdGVzdC9hcnRpY2xlL2V4Y2x1c2l2ZS1icmlhdG9yZS1vbi1ob3ctY2hhbmdlZC1jb2xhcGludG8tZWFybmVkLWhpcy1zZWF0LWZvci0yMDI2LWFuZC1oaXMuNHFZT3hEdDBOdDJjNFVsQnhpdzJ2SSIsInBhdGhUeXBlIjoiaW50ZXJuYWwifQ==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/exclusive-briatore-on-how-changed-colapinto-earned-his-seat-for-2026-and-his.4qYOxDt0Nt2c4UlBxiw2vI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conceded towards the end of 2025<\/a>. &#8220;Now we need to keep stability. Strong performances from both drivers<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">With all of those foundations in place, Alpine indeed appeared well set up for 2026 \u2013 but another factor at play in terms of whether that promise would follow through on the track would arguably rest on the ability of the drivers to deliver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Both Gasly and Colapinto achieved good mileage during pre-season testing \u2013 something that Colapinto admitted had <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" data-f1rd-a7s-click=\"rich_text_atom_click\"
