The New York Yankees<\/a> focused on adding depth to their lineup and bullpen at the MLB trade deadline, rather than make a splashy deal. But the deeper roster the team tried to build is being eroded by injuries.<\/p>\n

Utilityman Amed Rosario<\/a> was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained shoulder (the sternoclavicular, or SC, joint, to be exact), the team announced Sunday. He sustained the injury while running into the right-field wall during Friday’s 5-3 loss<\/a> to the Houston Astros<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A nine-year MLB veteran, Rosario was acquired from the Washington Nationals<\/a> for speed and defense, along with a bench bat versus left-handed pitching (.312\/.343\/.495). He’s appeared in four games with the Yankees, batting 4-of-7 with a double and one RBI while playing right field.<\/p>\n

Catcher J.C. Escarra<\/a> was recalled from Triple-A Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre to take Rosario’s spot on the active roster. In an earlier stint with the Yankees, he batted .205\/.299\/.337 with five doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI in 97 plate appearances.<\/p>\n

Rosario joins another trade-deadline addition, outfielder Austin Slater<\/a>, on the IL. Slater is expected to be out much longer with a strained left hamstring. Slater, acquired from the Chicago White Sox<\/a>, will be sidelined four to six weeks<\/a>, according to manager Aaron Boone.<\/p>\n

Last week, the Yankees also demoted pitcher Jake Bird<\/a> to Triple-A. Bird, one of three relievers<\/a> the Yankees acquired at the deadline, gave up a three-run, walk-off homer to Josh Jung in Monday’s 8-5 loss<\/a> to the Texas Rangers. Bird joined the Yankees from the Colorado Rockies<\/a> hours before the July 31 MLB trade deadline, along with David Bednar<\/a> from the Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> and Camilo Doval<\/a> from the San Francisco Giants.<\/p>\n

New third baseman Ryan McMahon<\/a> and utilityman Jos\u00e9 Caballero<\/a> have stayed healthy with the Yankees since coming over from the Rockies and Tampa Bay Rays<\/a>, respectively. But both players may want to be extra careful, considering what’s happened with their new teammates.<\/p>\n
