{"id":582330,"date":"2026-04-03T06:39:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T06:39:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/582330\/"},"modified":"2026-04-03T06:39:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T06:39:20","slug":"national-institute-of-dramatic-arts-former-director-john-clark-dies-aged-93","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/582330\/","title":{"rendered":"National Institute of Dramatic Art&#8217;s former director John Clark dies aged 93"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A giant of Australian theatre who helped launch the careers of some of the country&#8217;s biggest names of the stage has died aged 93.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">John Clark was director of the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) from 1969 until 2004 and was instrumental in establishing the Sydney Theatre Company in 1979.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There will be a global doffing of the hat and sadness to the passing of John Clark because his fingerprints start in Hobart and then extend via NIDA across the world,&#8221; said Tasmanian theatre director and producer Craig Wellington.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So I think from the West End to Hollywood, to little theatres in Hobart, there&#8217;ll be a few tears shed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading Instagram content<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Clark was born in Hobart on October 30, 1932.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He studied at the University of Tasmania and was a keen Aussie Rules footballer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">An interest in archaeology led him to Oxford University in the UK, and it was there that he fell in with a theatre crowd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;After doing uni revues in Hobart and Launceston in his misspent youth [he] decided theatre was this really great idea,&#8221; Mr Wellington said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"John Clark with Penny Cook.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/db885abe792745793b2342aa56520a1b.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">John Clark was passionate about nuturing Australian talent. (Instagram: NIDA Community)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He was offered a job at NIDA, which he accepted, moving to Sydney with Henrietta at the end of 1959.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He became director of NIDA in 1969.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When John took up the directorship \u2026 the school was housed in three dilapidated buildings,&#8221; NIDA said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A white, two-storey wooden house, The White House \u2026 was once the jockeys&#8217; changing rooms for the old Kensington Racecourse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The buildings were unbearably hot in summer, inexcusably cold in winter, and occasionally subject to bird lice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There was a two-year acting course and a two-year production course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When John retired from NIDA in 2004 there were four theatres, including the new Parade Theatre, nine rehearsal rooms, a film and television studio, scenery, costume and properties workshops, and a large library.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;NIDA graduates were national and international luminaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;John, working hand-in-hand with the indefatigable Elizabeth Butcher, had transformed NIDA into one of the world&#8217;s great drama schools.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Wellington said as an educator and theatre practitioner, Clark nurtured not only great performers but great designers and artists &#8220;across the realm of theatre&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And there really is no Sarah Snook or Cate Blanchett or Hugo Weaving or Essie Davis or Mel Gibson without NIDA, and therefore without John Clark,&#8221;  he said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man watching a performance from theatre seating\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/aa250d7e92a242d7d8294fbfb84bdb4e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">John Clark during a rehearsal in 2004. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p>A generous mentor<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Clark did not forget his roots, returning to his hometown of Hobart and directing productions for the Old Nick Company, of which he became a life member.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;m sure he could have been offered hundreds of thousands of dollars at that stage of his career to direct productions anywhere in the world,&#8221; Mr Wellington said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But gladly he came back to Hobart for the Old Nick Company and directed some works, including a landmark production of Hamlet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said Clark was a generous mentor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I remember us watching a rehearsal of Hamlet and he put his arm on my shoulder and said, &#8216;Isn&#8217;t it great to sit in the dark and be the wings on their shoulders.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And that was his mentality. (Supplied: National Institute of Dramatic Art)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Elizabeth Butcher, who worked with Clark for more than 40 years as an administrator, said his vision extended beyond NIDA and helped shaped the cultural life of Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;John&#8217;s legacy is everywhere.
