Austin \u2013 No. 6 Texas Women’s Tennis swept No. 16 Florida, 4-0, on Thursday at the Texas Tennis Center. The win was the Longhorns’ 10th in their last 11 matches.<\/p>\n
Texas secured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 after Florida had won at No. 1. The Longhorns then followed with straight-sets singles victories by freshman Elizabeth Ionescu<\/a> at No. 4, freshman Mathilde Ngijol-Carr\u00e9 at No. 6, and sophomore No. 3 Carmen Herea<\/a> at No. 1 for the clinch.<\/p>\n During doubles, Florida claimed the first match at No. 1 as the No. 31 pair of sophomore Salma Drugdova<\/a> and freshman Anastasia Abbagnato<\/a> fell to No. 22 Xinyi Nong and Nikola Daubnerova, 6-2. However, Texas responded with a 6-2 win of their own by the No. 88 duo of Ionescu and freshman Christasha McNeil<\/a> over Brooke Black and Valery Gynina at No. 2. That left the deciding match at No. 3, where Herea and Ngijol-Carr\u00e9 came through with a 6-3 victory over Lucie Pawlak and India Houghton to clinch.<\/p>\n Ionescu quickly gave the Longhorns a 2-0 overall lead with her decisive 6-1, 6-1 ranked singles victory over No. 105 Pawlak at No. 4. Ngijol-Carr\u00e9 picked up a top-100 win of her own against No. 86 Daubnerova at No. 6. Just seconds later, the clinch came from Herea, who secured a 6-4, 6-3 top-80 win over No. 86 Houghton at No. 1.<\/p>\n That left three matches unfinished with sophomore No. 49 Eszter Meri<\/a> potentially two games away from a win against No. 49 Gabia Paskauska, leading 6-4, 4-2, at No. 3 when play stopped. Meanwhile, No. 12 Abbagnato produced an impressive first set against No. 68 Gynina, but was down a break in a third set, 6-1, 4-6, 1-3, at No. 2. \nMatch:\u00a0Florida broke first for a 2-1 lead, but Texas finished on a 5-0 run capped by consecutive deuce points.<\/p>\n
\nMatch:\u00a0After the teams exchanged breaks, Texas held at deuce for 2-1 and broke for 3-1. Florida broke back at deuce and held for 3-3, but the Longhorns closed 3-0 with a deuce-point break for 5-3.<\/p>\n
\nSet One:\u00a0Pawlak broke in the first game, but Ionescu ran the table, winning deuce points for 2-1, 4-1, 5-1 and 6-1.\u00a0
\nSet Two:\u00a0Ionescu won the first for games for 10 straight. Pawlak held at deuce for 4-1, but Ionescu did the same and broke for 6-1.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\nSet One:\u00a0Daubnerova broke to start but Ngijol-Carr\u00e9 broke back at deuce and the set was on serve until Ngijol-Carr\u00e9 broke at deuce again for 5-3. The last two games were also breaks for Ngijol-Carr\u00e9’s win.
\nSet Two:\u00a0Daubnerova again opened with a break, but Ngijol-Carr\u00e9 went on a 4-0 run. Daubnerova held at deuce for 4-2 but Ngijol-Carr\u00e9 took the last two games.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\nSet One:\u00a0Herea broke for 2-0 and Houghton broke back at deuce. Despite Houghton twice holding at deuce for 3-3 and 4-4, the set stayed on serve until Herea broke again for 6-4.
\nSet Two:\u00a0Herea earned the only break for 2-0. Three-straight games went to deuce from 4-2 to 5-3.<\/p>\n
\nSet One:\u00a0Abbagnato jumped out to a 5-0 lead, capped by a deuce-point hold, and the last two games were holds.
\nSet Two:\u00a0Abbagnato broke and held at deuce for 2-0. The next two games were also held at deuce for 3-1. Gynina got the break back at deuce for 3-3 and held at deuce for 4-3. She later broke again at deuce for the set for 6-4.
