Big T open to Chinese imports to lower EV cost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As legacy manufactures embrace Chinese manufacturing to make EVs more competitive, even Toyota is considering the switch<\/p>\n<p>Toyota Australia has confirmed it\u2019s open to importing vehicles from China to address a clear market for lower-cost EVs.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the preview of the fully electric <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chasingcars.com.au\/news\/new-car-prices\/toyota-hilux-ev-priced-for-australia-315km-capable-ute-priced-from-74990-with-just-500-sales-expected-in-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Hilux BEV<\/a> \u2013 a ute priced some $20,000 above its combustion counterpart \u2013 newly appointed vice president of sales and marketing John Pappas said there was space for cheaper models in its range.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beautiful thing about being a global company like Toyota, when you\u2019re represented in about 190 countries around the world and you\u2019re building at different locations manufacturing wise, is that then you are more open to your sourcing strategy,\u201d he told Chasing Cars.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if there was space for a cheaper EV beneath the recently updated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chasingcars.com.au\/toyota\/bz4x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BZ4X<\/a> (priced from $55,990 before on-road costs), Pappas said \u201cthe market was there\u201d, adding \u201cnothing to confirm today, but we\u2019re always looking at those avenues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Untitled-7-4-620x349.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-115541\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s got to be competitive in our marketplace and meet customer needs\u2026for us to take something like that, it\u2019s not about China, it\u2019s about any sources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If embraced, Toyota would be the latest mainstream car manufacturer to pursue cheaper production costs by sourcing electric vehicles from China.<\/p>\n<p>Korean carmakers including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chasingcars.com.au\/kia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kia<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chasingcars.com.au\/kia\/ev5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EV5<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chasingcars.com.au\/hyundai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hyundai<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chasingcars.com.au\/hyundai\/elexio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elexio<\/a> have already launched China-sourced EVs in Australia with competitive prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chasingcars.com.au\/mazda\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mazda<\/a> will do so later this year with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chasingcars.com.au\/news\/electric-vehicles\/mid-50000-price-teased-for-electric-mazda-cx-6e-could-undercut-tesla-model-y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CX-6E<\/a> and its 6E sedan counterpart, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chasingcars.com.au\/nissan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nissan<\/a> is mulling taking its Chinese joint venture products global, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" data-id=\"115543\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Untitled-6-620x349.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-115543\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Is a sub-$24,000 electric Corolla Cross sibling possible?<\/p>\n<p>In China, a vast array of Toyota-branded vehicles are offered. Many of which are built via joint ventures with local brands, such as the BZ3X medium SUV in collaboration with GAC.<\/p>\n<p>Available in its home market from a sharp, sub-A$24,000 price point, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chasingcars.com.au\/news\/future-cars\/new-toyota-bz3c-and-bz3x-hint-at-future-evs-for-australia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BZ3X<\/a> recently began production for right-hand drive markets including Hong Kong.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The BZ3x\u2019s 68kWh battery provides a respectable range of 565km, albeit according to the lenient NEDC standard.
