His Spurs teammates had little choice but to try and clear it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>After the Spurs won their 50th game of the season a little more than two weeks ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/sports\/spurs\/article\/what-spurs-say-clippers-beating-monday-22081720.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beating the Los Angeles Clippers 119-115 on their home floor<\/a>, Wembanyama made clear he was gunning for a different round number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to win 60,\u201d Wembanyama said then.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the Intuit Dome on Thursday, this time with Wembanyama in street clothes caretaking a sore right ankle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/sports\/spurs\/article\/3-takeaways-spurs-rout-clippers-wembanyama-22187001.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Spurs reeled off a 118-99 victory over the Clippers <\/a>that pulled them one step closer to their All-Star center\u2019s newest stated goal.<\/p>\n<p>With the Spurs\u2019 record now at 59-18, 60 wins no longer feel like a pie-in-the-sky aspiration.<\/p>\n<p>It feels like a formality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Saturday in Denver, the Spurs take their first shot at the eighth 60-win season in franchise history.\u00a0Failing that, they close the regular season with a four-game homestand that should provide fertile ground to hit that hallowed number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know what the main goal is, and that\u2019s getting prepared for the playoffs,\u201d forward Keldon Johnson said. \u201cEach game, we get a chance to lock in and get better. We don\u2019t take the opportunity for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Thursday\u2019s short-handed victory against the Clippers, the Spurs head to Denver on an 11-game winning streak that matches their longest of the season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/sports\/spurs\/article\/spurs-vs-nuggets-how-watch-game-starting-22185413.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spurs vs. Nuggets: How to watch the game, who&#8217;s starting, who&#8217;s out<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>It was a streak that seemed ripe to end in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the Spurs walked into the Intuit Dome with their leading scorer, rebounder and shot-blocker sidelined and nevertheless beat the pants off a team they could quite possibly face in the first round of the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just shows how serious we are about all this,\u201d forward Julian Champagnie said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to be locked in with or without the big fella. I think it shows the depth of the team that we can win these games without him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before Thursday\u2019s game, Clippers coach Ty Lue tried to remind his team of the challenge at hand, even with the Spurs\u2019 7-foot-4 centerpiece on the bench in loafers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re a good team even when Wemby is not playing,\u201d Lue said.<\/p>\n<p>Over the ensuing 48 minutes, the Spurs made that a point to prove.\u00a0An All-Star in his own right, De\u2019Aaron Fox got the Spurs started early Thursday on his way to 22 points. Stephon Castle took over late on his way to 20.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\">WILL HE HIT 65? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/sports\/spurs\/article\/spurs-plan-manage-wembanyama-s-angry-ankle-22187596.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How the Spurs plan to manage Wembanyama&#8217;s &#8216;angry&#8217; ankle for the playoffs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Spurs went ahead by 26 points one possession into the second half, eventually improving to 21-0 this season when leading by at least 25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Even without Wembanyama, the NBA&#8217;s presumptive Defensive Player of the Year, the Spurs made the Clippers their third opponent in five games to fail to reach 100 points.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a very satisfying effort by a lot of people on our team,\u201d coach\u00a0Mitch Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>For the Spurs, it wasn\u2019t just a victory.<\/p>\n<p>It was the kind of outing that might be remembered by both teams should they meet again in 2 \u00bd weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou try to have as many statement wins as you can,\u201d Fox said.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s game was one. Now, the Spurs head to Denver with a chance to earn another one.<\/p>\n<p>By record, the 49-28 Nuggets are the best team remaining on the Spurs\u2019 schedule. Terrill\/Associated Press<\/p>\n<p>The Nuggets have only had their power trio of Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon healthy for 23 games this season. Denver is 17-6 in those contests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>All three are expected to be available Saturday. Of course, so too is Wembanyama.<\/p>\n<p>The Spurs have shown they can win without the 7-foot-4 force of nature, going 11-5 in his absence this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew we weren\u2019t going to have big fella (Thursday), so we knew we needed to stay extra sharp,\u201d Keldon Johnson said. \u201cA lot of guys stepped up and had big moments and big plays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Mitch Johnson, the touchstones over the final two weeks of the season will not sound much different than what they were when all of this began in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>He will stress attention to detail in the game plan, transition defense, rebounding, playing with intention and pace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had a good year being us, but it\u2019s still our first journey,\u201d Mitch Johnson said. \u201cWe\u2019re not trying to become some exotic version of what we were a few months ago. We just want to continue to be a better version of what we were yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If the Spurs accomplish that, many of their other goals will fall into place.<\/p>\n<p>With a win Saturday in Denver, the Spurs can post their longest winning streak of an already surprising season.\u00a0They would also ring up their 60th victory of the season, a goal that even a month ago might have felt like lunacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The Spurs\u2019 most recent 60-win season came in 2016-17.
