To be a fan of 90s pop behemoths the Spice Girls in recent years has, at times, been an exercise in humiliation.<\/p>\n
When it seems like every other 90s pop act is able to pull it together to cash in on fans\u2019 nostalgia, it\u2019s hard not to be frustrated by the Spice Girls\u2019 apparent inability to get anything over the line (aside from, of course, random expensive merchandise drops<\/a> that nobody asked for). <\/p>\n But 2026 seemed like it\u2019d be a no-brainer for some sort of reunion celebration: In June it will be 30 years since the group burst onto the scene with their world-conquering debut single Wannabe. <\/p>\n Despite so many false starts, \u201cScary Spice\u201d Mel B has always been the group\u2019s most \u2026 let\u2019s say, optimistic member. She seemingly never tires of press questions about the reunion, and always strikes a hopeful tone, saying that she\u2019s working behind the scenes to get the other less willing group members (aka Victoria Beckham and Geri Halliwell-Horner) on board. <\/p>\n MORE: David, Victoria Beckham\u2019s shock move revealed<\/a><\/p>\n Which makes Mel\u2019s latest interview so startling. <\/p>\n In a candid new chat with Hello! Magazine<\/a>, Mel says that, after reaching the milestone age of 50 last year, she\u2019s made peace with the fact the band will never reunite \u2013 and she\u2019s stopped trying to make it happen. <\/p>\n \u201cI can tell you it\u2019s not happening,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n \u201cIf it does, it\u2019ll be a shock to me, let\u2019s put it that way. When I look at that [2019 tour] and at the feeling it gave me, I was in my element, but there comes a time \u2026 I\u2019m 50. You can\u2019t be nagging everyone to go on tour if they don\u2019t want to. I laid that to rest when I turned 50.\u201d<\/p>\n Perhaps more shockingly, Mel told Hello<\/a> that even if the others were on board for a reunion tour, she would now be reluctant to take part.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve got fond memories, but I don\u2019t know if I would want to go back up on stage,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n She also gave an explanation as to why yet another aborted Spice Girls project \u2013 plans for a tell-all Netflix documentary \u2013 never got off the ground.<\/p>\n \u201cI think we\u2019ve all been asked and were all thinking about it at some point,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it has to be done in the right way, and it has to be honest \u2013 and not everybody wants to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n This new interview has sent shockwaves among pop fans still holding out hope the group might reunite some day soon. <\/p>\n \u201cHeartbreaking to hear about the reunion,\u201d one fan commented under Mel\u2019s Instagram post<\/a> sharing the interview. <\/p>\n \u201cI just don\u2019t understand why they won\u2019t do a reunion tour,\u201d another complained.<\/p>\n Another asked why Mel now seemingly has \u201cresentment\u201d about the prospect of reuniting. \u201cShe\u2019s the one to hope for a reunion every time and now she said she doesn’t know if she would accept a tour?\u201d they asked.<\/p>\n It was Mel B, let\u2019s not forget, who announced on stage at Wembley Stadium in 2019 at the end of the Spice Girls\u2019 last short reunion tour that their next stop would be in Australia early the next year (spoiler: It wasn\u2019t). <\/p>\n When I spoke to Mel<\/a> in her dressing room at The Masked Singer in 2022, she said she was still \u201chopeful\u201d the group would soon reunite for another tour that would include their first-ever Australian dates.<\/p>\n \u201cI do miss it, and I\u2019m always eager to go back on stage,\u201d she said. \u201cI love being up there; especially with my girls. Those shows were just massive.\u201d<\/p>\n Fellow Spice Girl Melanie C struck a similarly hopeful tone when asked about reunion plans in an interview with news.com.au<\/a> late last year, saying that it felt like it would be \u201crude not to\u201d reunite for their 30th anniversary \u2013 but that \u201cthe thing with the Spice Girls is, it\u2019s hard to get everybody in the same frame of mind at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n And she said that she was not \u201cthe one that needs convincing. I\u2019m ready, let\u2019s go! But I\u2019ll keep working on some of the others who are being a bit tricky \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n A recent move from Melanie C suggested that she too had given up on a 30th anniversary reunion: Last month she announced her biggest solo tour to date, taking her across the world for several months later this year. <\/p>\n
