Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek says \u201cit\u2019s no secret\u201d that declining numbers of petrol and diesel vehicles are eroding fuel excise revenue, leaving less money to build and maintain Australia\u2019s roads.<\/p>\n
Her comments come as industry and government leaders meet to discuss a possible road user charge for electric vehicle (EV) drivers ahead of the Albanese government\u2019s economic reform roundtable next week.<\/p>\n
While stressing that any charge on EVs wouldn\u2019t be \u201chappening tomorrow,\u201d Ms Plibersek said it was important to consider long-term measures to secure road funding.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do think it\u2019s sensible to look long-term for the states and territories at what they do to make sure that there\u2019s enough money to build the roads that people want to drive on and to make sure they\u2019re maintained as well,\u201d she told Sunrise.<\/p>\n
Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce was speaking alongside Ms Plibersek and said: \u201cI have a sense there\u2019s a lot of EVs in Tanya\u2019s electorate, so she doesn\u2019t want to jump right in there, got to be careful about that.\u201d<\/p>\n
