Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>In the words of Suns coach Damien Hardwick, the \u201cunderestimated\u201d Demons \u201cabsolutely spanked\u201d their opponents in the middle as they held on to win 16.13 (109) to 14.5 (89), defying predictions and denying the visitors an expected victory.<\/p>\n<p>Only 24,287 were on hand at the MCG on Sunday, but the roar of the Demons\u2019 faithful sounded far louder.<\/p>\n<p>King said he hoped the team and fans were excited by the season so far \u2013 the Demons are now 3-1 \u2013 but noted they weren\u2019t pursuing perfection on the field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re never sure how quickly it can click and to get it to this point so far is pretty encouraging,\u201d King said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got an amazing coaching group that believe in their players and I think the players now are starting to believe in themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He highlighted the team\u2019s camaraderie and said players were eager to celebrate each other\u2019s achievements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you\u2019re after is a group of people who believe in each other and want to play for each other and I think we are starting to see that unfold in front of our eyes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Melksham told Fox Footy that Melbourne\u2019s game plan under King had changed, with a greater emphasis on freedom to move the ball<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a forward, the way we\u2019re moving it helps old guys like me still look somewhat young,\u201d Melksham joked.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Matt Rowell tackles Christian Salem.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/7514357d8400a948c15ba5a4ce24be9e14cdf90c.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Matt Rowell tackles Christian Salem.AFL Photos via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The Suns felt the absence of star midfielder <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/sport\/afl\/petracca-doubted-he-could-reproduce-his-best-after-life-changing-injuries-he-just-proved-he-can-20260306-p5o8ax.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Petracca<\/a>, who would have come up against his old team for the first time since leaving last off-season but missed with a hamstring injury.
