Not only is the team on the right side of the playoff picture, but it also has just four games left.<\/p>\n
The front office clearly lost faith in Roy despite the fact he has had the squad overachieving.<\/p>\n
New York is riding a four-game losing streak, and it has allowed 20 goals during that span. The malaise goes back further as the Islanders have dropped seven of their last 10 and notched eight wins since the calendar turned over to March.<\/p>\n
Even assuming they made the playoffs under Roy, their results were trending in the wrong direction and presented a foreboding feeling ahead of a first-round series.<\/p>\n
DeBoer has 662 wins as an NHL coach across 18 seasons. He took the New Jersey Devils to the Stanley Cup Final in 2012 and got there again with the San Jose Sharks in 2016. The 57-year-old is most recently coming off a spell with the Dallas Stars in which they made three straight appearances in the conference finals.<\/p>\n
Going from Roy to DeBoer is an upgrade for New York. But DeBoer doesn’t have a lot of time to make an impression on his new players, and a coaching change may not alter the Isles’ trajectory.<\/p>\n
They can win all of their remaining games and still miss the playoffs. The Philadelphia Flyers and Columbus Blue Jackets are only one point back in the division and have both played fewer games. The same is true for the Detroit Red Wings, who are the last team out in the wild-card race.<\/p>\n
More than anything, this might be general manager Mathieu Darche’s way to set the table for next season.
