L.A. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/game\/_\/gameId\/401810995\/lakers-mavericks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost 134-128<\/a> to the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"f00d1f4e-4ce6-d581-466c-5b52531cf7ad\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/dal\/dallas-mavericks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas Mavericks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>L.A. allowed 41 first-quarter points with Mavs rookie standout <a data-player-guid=\"6cf6ea11-b3e4-35fd-bb91-f9f6caf6e2c8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/5041939\/cooper-flagg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cooper Flagg<\/a> scoring 19 of his 45 points in the opening frame. The Lakers trailed by as many as 22 before attempting a comeback but never cut the deficit closer than five.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think everybody felt like they were in a good rhythm,&#8221; said <a data-player-guid=\"1f6592b3-ff53-d321-8dc5-6038d48c1786\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/1966\/lebron-james\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LeBron James<\/a>, who scored 30 points on 12-for-22 shooting with 15 assists and nine rebounds. &#8220;But in order for us to play to the capabilities that want to play at, it&#8217;s going to be on the defensive end.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All five Lakers starters scored in double digits, including <a data-player-guid=\"668a6a14-4003-d79c-c252-0ece0a960d36\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3913174\/luke-kennard\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luke Kennard<\/a> notching his first career triple-double with 15 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists, and backup center <a data-player-guid=\"4cd92ac1-73ce-653d-c3b1-9c68e9c7a4d0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4397077\/jaxson-hayes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jaxson Hayes<\/a> added 23 points off the bench, but the Mavs also put five players in double figures and shot 52.3% from the field and 43.8% from 3 as a team.<\/p>\n<p>The Lakers&#8217; starting lineup of James, Kennard, <a data-player-guid=\"9af41ea8-a24c-025f-a63f-8263fbf0ca66\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4278129\/deandre-ayton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deandre Ayton<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"40c1bcf6-675b-f217-f97c-1d628073f927\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4066648\/rui-hachimura\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rui Hachimura<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"a2ffece1-7bf0-3c54-aa59-b150b6ecd315\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4592691\/jake-laravia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jake LaRavia<\/a> had not played a minute together all season, much less started a game. The lineup L.A. started the second quarter with &#8212; James, <a data-player-guid=\"888ccde3-98d4-6ef8-c697-d6a4ce158f87\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4278077\/jarred-vanderbilt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jarred Vanderbilt<\/a>, Hayes, <a data-player-guid=\"d06ad722-26ff-5865-1433-061e2e6fbb32\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/2960236\/maxi-kleber\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maxi Kleber<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"0fe19f0d-036e-35de-80f5-ddfc232292db\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4683736\/kobe-bufkin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kobe Bufkin<\/a> &#8212; hadn&#8217;t played a minute together either before that.<\/p>\n<p>It was emblematic of the scramble mode the franchise found itself in after processing the Doncic news Friday, followed by the Reaves news &#8212; with his oblique expected to sideline him for 4-6 weeks, sources told ESPN &#8212; a day later.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I took my nap after practice and I woke up with that news, it was like another shot to the [head],&#8221; James said of learning about Reaves&#8217; MRI results Saturday. &#8220;It was a shot to the heart, obviously, and to the chest and to the mainframe with Luka. &#8230; But we kind of got that news kind of quick, and AR &#8230; we knew he was going to get an MRI, but I woke up from my nap yesterday and then saw that news and I was like, &#8216;S&#8212;.&#8217; That was literally my tone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While James led the Lakers in points and field goal attempts, Redick said before the Mavs game that it will be &#8220;all hands on deck&#8221; for L.A. with Doncic and Reaves out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The burden&#8217;s not going to just be on LeBron to create all the offense,&#8221; Redick said.<\/p>\n<p>The Lakers followed with 36 assists &#8212; tied for their second-most in a game all season &#8211; to give themselves a chance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Obviously, we ran some lineups that they haven&#8217;t seen all year,&#8221; Kennard said. &#8220;And when we were down, we stayed together, something we&#8217;ve been doing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>L.A. (50-28) is still in the No. 3 spot in the Western Conference, holding the tiebreaker against the No. 4 <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"c4aceb39-0eb9-a30b-1120-9cb5b12b677a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/den\/denver-nuggets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Denver Nuggets<\/a> (50-28) with four games remaining. The No. 6 <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"13f727cb-254d-b484-a337-93fcc0047add\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/min\/minnesota-timberwolves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Minnesota Timberwolves<\/a>&#8216; 122-108 loss to the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"377633c2-0dd1-91a1-83c0-9ed2d0c00ea1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/cha\/charlotte-hornets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charlotte Hornets<\/a> on Sunday ensured that the worst the Lakers can finish is fifth &#8212; the spot currently occupied by the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"78113ad4-1ac7-0c04-dada-388a6ff4e15e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/hou\/houston-rockets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Rockets<\/a> (48-29).<\/p>\n<p>Their next game is Tuesday against Oklahoma City.<\/p>\n<p>Before looking ahead to the rematch, Redick looked back at Thursday&#8217;s debacle and defended his decision to keep Doncic and Reaves in the game in the third quarter and risk injury when L.A. trailed by 30-plus points.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been in those situations a million times, and as a coach, you go on the information you have,&#8221; Redick said. &#8220;[Doncic] was medically cleared. When Austin came back, I asked directly, &#8216;I thought he was hurt?&#8217; [I was told], &#8216;No, he&#8217;s medically cleared.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The group wanted to go for it in the second half. Talked about it at halftime. And for both those guys, the nature of playing heavy minutes [making them susceptible to injuries] &#8230; there was nothing leading into that game that would suggest either those guys were &#8216;running hot,&#8217; as we call it.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dave McMenamin Close Dave McMenamin ESPN Staff WriterLakers and NBA reporter for ESPN.
