said Lovell, who passed away last year aged 97.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a historic day, and I know how busy you\u2019ll be, but don\u2019t forget to enjoy the view\u2026 good luck and godspeed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Yesterday, they had woken to a message from Apollo 16 astronaut Charlie Duke, who is still alive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;On the Moon is a photo of my family,&#8221; Peter Roebers<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Good question, Peter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The journey promises glimpses of the Moon&#8217;s far side that were too dark or difficult to make out during the previous Apollo missions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Because of the current mission&#8217;s April 1 launch, not all of the far side will be illuminated for the Artemis II crew either but the lighting conditions are expected to be more favourable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NASA geologist Kelsey Young\u00a0says the crew should still be able to see &#8220;definite chunks of the far side that have never been seen&#8221; to mark the milestone of breaking the distance record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">According to NASA, the crew chose this name for their home away from home because it &#8220;embodies the foundation of trust, respect, candor, and humility&#8221; of the teams behind the mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Meanwhile, the name of the mission \u2014 Artemis \u2014 relates to Greek mythology.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/lcimg-00f6d017-d231-4a4f-813c-98748b12cc5c.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"image_fluidImage__Sg10H\" data-component=\"LiveBlogPostImg\"\/>In Greek mythology, Artemis is the goddess of the Moon and the twin sister of Apollo.
