{"id":589864,"date":"2026-04-06T21:11:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T21:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/589864\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T21:11:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T21:11:14","slug":"four-expert-backed-steps-to-surviving-the-anniversary-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/589864\/","title":{"rendered":"Four expert-backed steps to surviving the \u2018anniversary effect\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every February 11, the anniversary of the untimely death of my 19-year-old best friend hits me and I feel a heaviness that doesn\u2019t lift until the day\u2019s end.<\/p>\n<p>The day when you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/loved-ones-death-health-age-b2587725.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:lost a loved one;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">lost a loved one<\/a>, had an accident, or experienced another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/news\/manage-festive-season-grieving-according-060000974.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:traumatic event;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">traumatic event <\/a>can trigger grief, anger, sadness and anxiety \u2013 and also cause physical symptoms, like sickness and insomnia. In more severe cases, people suffering from <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.jhu.edu\/2023\/ptsd-can-affect-anyone-but-there-are-ways-to-manage-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:PTSD;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">PTSD<\/a> may relive experiences in vivid flashbacks or dreams.<\/p>\n<p>Experts call this \u201canniversary syndrome\u201d or the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/americans-boston-chicago-los-angeles-seattle-b2824179.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:anniversary;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">anniversary<\/a> effect,\u201d and every person\u2019s experience is unique. Some 70 percent of U.S. adults say they\u2019ve experienced at least one traumatic event, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalcouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Trauma-infographic.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:National Council for Behavioral Health;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">National Council for Behavioral Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring these times, these feelings and reactions can be strong and often \u2018take you back,\u2019\u201d the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/wtc\/commemoration_15th.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Centers for Disease Control and Prevention;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> says. The symptoms might begin in the weeks before and intensify as the date nears, the CDC adds. If you don\u2019t keep a sleep routine, it can throw off your circadian rhythm &#8211; the body\u2019s way of regulating hormones, digestion and temperature, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/circadian-rhythm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Cleveland Clinic;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Disrupting that internal clock can worsen the anniversary effect and also increase the likelihood of developing anxiety and depression.<\/p>\n<p>So stick to a sleep schedule. That means going to bed and waking up at the same time, including on weekends, the <a href=\"http:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=44681X1458326&amp;articleId=b2950470&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mayoclinic.org%2Fhealthy-lifestyle%2Fadult-health%2Fin-depth%2Fsleep%2Fart-20048379&amp;sref=\/life-style\/health-and-families\/anniversary-effect-trauma-anxiety-depression-b2950470.html\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mayo Clinic;elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Mayo Clinic<\/a> instructs.<\/p>\n<p>Going for a walk in sunlight, within the hour you wake up, helps signal to your brain and body that it\u2019s daytime, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bannerhealth.com\/healthcareblog\/teach-me\/sun-gating-and-morning-light-for-better-sleep\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Banner Health;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Banner Health<\/a> nurse practitioner Alexandra Lessem, \u201csetting the circadian clock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t be outside, sitting by an open window with direct sunlight has a similar effect.<\/p>\n<p>A balanced diet packed with fruit and vegetables is crucial for a good night\u2019s sleep. <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5409706\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Several foods naturally contain melatonin;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Several foods naturally contain melatonin<\/a>, such as cherries, pistachios, almonds, eggs and fish, the National Institutes of Health says, and can help make you sleepy.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to drink plenty of water and move your body every day. As little as 10 minutes of moderate or vigorous activity, such as walking briskly or running, is enough to get more restorative sleep, Benjamin Baird, research assistant professor of psychology at the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utexas.edu\/2025\/07\/14\/daily-exercise-may-be-key-to-better-sleep-new-study-finds\/#:~:text=Chris%20Corral%2C%20who%20recently%20earned,to%20better%20overall%20well%2Dbeing.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:University of Texas at Austin;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">University of Texas at Austin<\/a>, said.<\/p>\n<p>Mindful medicine<\/p>\n<p>A few minutes of meditation a day helps with symptoms of anxiety, depression and trauma, and lets people connect with their inner self.<\/p>\n<p>The ancient mind-body practice regulates the sympathetic nervous system, lowers the <a href=\"https:\/\/caps.byu.edu\/meditation#:~:text=Meditation%20is%20the%20practice%20of%20focusing%20attention,ticking%20clock%20*%20A%20phrase%20or%20word\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:heart rate;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">heart rate<\/a> and levels of the stress hormone cortisol, the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/17906-meditation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Cleveland Clinic;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p>If you are new to meditation, begin with just a minute and build from there. The practice is thousands of years old (AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Social service<\/p>\n<p>As a difficult date on the calendar approaches, reach out to family and friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some folks that, even months before, are nervous about the anniversary,\u201d Laura Murray, a senior scientist in mental health and a clinical psychologist at Johns Hopkins Medicine, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.jhu.edu\/2024\/the-anniversary-effect-of-traumatic-experiences\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:statement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">statement<\/a>. \u201cThey&#8217;re thinking about it, trying to figure out how to manage it &#8211; we sometimes describe this as spinning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Telling others not to bring up a death or traumatic event in the days before an anniversary can help friends or family struggling with trauma to avoid undue stress.<\/p>\n<p>Make plans &#8211; even if it\u2019s something small like going to a movie with a loved one or a board game night with friends. \u201cIt is important not to isolate yourself. Instead make efforts to be with others,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptsd.va.gov\/gethelp\/coping_stress_reactions.asp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:National Center for PTSD;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">National Center for PTSD<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t want to confide in friends and family, talk to a trauma therapist. These experts are specifically trained in techniques such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy. The therapy, first tested in 1989, involves moving your eyes a specific way while you process traumatic memories. It can improve mood without having to talk about negative events, the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/22641-emdr-therapy#risks-benefits\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Cleveland Clinic;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p>All in the technique<\/p>\n<p>Mental health experts recommend some tools that can alleviate the anniversary effect.<\/p>\n<p>If you are feeling stressed or stuck thinking about the event, focus on the five senses &#8211; sight, smell, touch, sound and taste &#8211; to bring you back to the present, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/blog\/7-tools-for-managing-traumatic-stress\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:National Alliance on Mental Illness;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">National Alliance on Mental Illness<\/a> says. This might start with the feel of your clothing, the sound of bird chirping nearby or the smell of food wafting from a restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen notice four of each, then three of each, and so on,\u201d the alliance advises.<\/p>\n<p>Being told to stay positive may make you roll your eyes, but thinking positively can reduce stress, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/the-power-of-positive-thinking\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Johns Hopkins Medicine;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/a>. Bring up some of those silly cat videos on your phone &#8211; the simple acts of smiling and laughing fight stress by lowering heart rate and blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Or pay it forward: send someone a thoughtful card or buy a coffee for a stranger.
