(ABC News: Laura Mayers)<\/p>\n<p>What do the latest figures show?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In Ballarat, for the year ending December 2025, there were 2,953 recorded family violence incidents, slightly up on 2,926 incidents the previous year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There was also an increase in the number of women seeking help from violence support services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Respect Ballarat chief executive Helen Bolton said the figures were &#8220;concerning&#8221; but came in the wake of three high-profile deaths of women in Ballarat two years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There was an increase in police recorded family violence incidents and high rates of sexual offences [in the 2024-2025 period] but what we know that occurred during that time was \u2026 the three [deaths],&#8221; Ms Bolton said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with a serious expression sitting in front of an abstract painting\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/37df1f864d69666742cfb137b2772ea9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Helen Bolton says changing societal attitudes towards women requires a long-term commitment. \u00a0 (ABC News: Steven Schubert)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If we see a sustained investment in prevention work in Ballarat, or in any region, we know that help-seeking statistics \u2014 including reports to police, or calls to support services \u2014 will increase before they go down as people begin to understand more and identify violent relationships.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Changing attitudes and behaviours is long-term work, and we sadly won&#8217;t see a reduction overnight.&#8221;Calls for long-term funding<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The federal Labor government has invested $9.8 million over four years to Respect Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Ms Bolton warns it will take longer than four years to achieve the kind of generational change the program hopes to deliver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What we need a long-term approach to addressing gendered violence,&#8221; Ms Bolton said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ballarat cannot do it alone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Bolton said there were efforts to secure long-term funding through philanthropic support and government funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[International evidence] indicated that to drive down rates of violence you needed concentrated effort over a 10-year period, so that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re hoping to be able to achieve,&#8221; Ms Cronin said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sexual assault\u00a0support lines:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The commissioner previously described <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-30\/violence-against-women-national-watchdog-micaela-cronin\/105949568\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105949568\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">efforts to eliminate violence as frequently fragmented<\/a> and not following recommendations from inquiries into the issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Cronin said prevention was one of the keys to eliminating domestic, family and sexual violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Prevention must begin in childhood \u2014 we must have a razor\u2011sharp and united focus on addressing children&#8217;s and young people&#8217;s needs,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In her 2025 report into domestic, sexual and family violence, Ms Cronin raised concerns not enough was being done to address violence against women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The gap between what we know needs to be done and what \u2013 and most critically how \u2013 we are implementing at scale has never been more apparent,&#8221; she wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ash Milne is the program manager of WRISC Family Violence Support, a not-for-profit organisation supporting women and children affected by family violence across the Central Highlands region of Victoria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Milne said a one-size-fits-all approach would miss the local context and demographics of a particular area, but the tenets of Respect Ballarat could be applied nationally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The core principles \u2014 prevention, early intervention, genuine collaboration, and sustained funding \u2014 absolutely should be embedded statewide and nationally,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Milne said while prevention and early intervention were essential to reducing family violence, there were problems beyond the scope of programs like Respect Ballarat, and more support was needed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[Early intervention and prevention] approaches do not lessen the immediate and ongoing demand on response systems already supporting victim\u2011survivors,&#8221; Ms Milne said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Frontline services, police, courts, health, and housing systems are responding to high and complex demand now, and continued investment in the strength, coordination, and capacity of these response systems is critical to ensuring safety and effective support.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Almost two years ago, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared that violence against women was a national crisis.
