(ABC News: Lily Nothling)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The overwhelming feeling for us is a sense of powerlessness and a sense of disbelief that anyone could find themself in this situation,&#8221; Ms Mason said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For as long as providers are able to make a determination about who they&#8217;ll take and who they won&#8217;t take, the chances of her getting a place anywhere actually feels impossible.&#8221;Patients cherry picked amid bed shortage<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mrs Wansey&#8217;s case is an extreme example of what is commonly called &#8220;bed block&#8221;, but her experience is far from isolated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">National figures revealed in a recent report by the states and territories showed <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-13\/aged-care-hospital-funding-bed-block\/106336820\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106336820\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">there were more than 3,000 aged care patients stuck in hospital beds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the nation&#8217;s capital, Canberra Health Services said 69 patients were waiting for a residential aged care home placement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"man standing outside looking at camera\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/d78816ec5e4e08d62b77f40e555086cd.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Corey Irlam says aged care operators being able to select which patients to accept is a core issue. (ABC News: Andrew Whitington)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Council on the Ageing acting CEO Corey Irlam said it was &#8220;not uncommon&#8221; for the advocacy body to hear outlying cases where people were stuck for &#8220;two or three years&#8221; waiting for a suitable provider.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said a core issue was aged care operators being able to &#8220;cherry pick&#8221; which patients to accept, based on their wealth or clinical profile.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Is there any obligation on a provider to take everyone? No, there&#8217;s not. And that&#8217;s the problem,&#8221;  Mr Irlam said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the crux of the challenge is a persistent national aged care bed shortage, made more serious as Australia grapples with an ageing population.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They estimate somewhere around 10,000 new beds per year for the next 10 years \u2014 an extra 100,000 beds \u2014 need to come online,&#8221; Mr Irlam said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That&#8217;s a lot of age care facilities when you think about the average number of beds per nursing home is about 70.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Undignified and dehumanising&#8217;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with grey hair and glasses sits in a wheelchair in a hospital room.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/71b7c60d07ae3a618fa8f15208975717.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mary Wansey says the smaller room offered to her at Arcare Aranda did not meet her accessibility needs. (ABC News: Lily Nothling)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In September 2025, Mrs Wansey was given a bed at Canberra&#8217;s newly opened Arcare Aranda on a short-term respite agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She was declined a permanent place due to the complexity of her care needs, a position her family challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">An in-principle agreement to extend Mrs Wansey&#8217;s stay for another six months was contingent on her moving to a smaller room, which she said did not meet her accessibility needs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t have been safe in that room \u2014 I couldn&#8217;t have moved,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Day to day, I&#8217;d have to clean my teeth in the shower and just spit wherever I was, over me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with grey hair and glasses sits in a wheelchair, a woman with long brown hair leaning next to her in a hospital.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cb09f07fc0108560299a70eec1d2b70d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The proposal to move Mary Wansey to a smaller room prompted her to return to hospital.
