After months of UFC CEO Dana White teasing one of the \u2018biggest cards in UFC history\u2019, Topuria vs. Gaethje will look to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bjpenn.com\/mma-news\/ilia-topuria\/ilia-topuria-shares-cold-message-donald-trump-ufc-freedom-250-headliner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deliver on lofty pre-event expectations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before Topuria vs. Gaethje was formally announced by White, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bjpenn.com\/mma-news\/michael-bisping\/ilia-topuria-vs-islam-makhachev-is-the-fight-to-make-at-ufc-white-house-says-michael-bisping\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rumors swirled about a potential superfight<\/a> between Topuria and reigning UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev on the White House lawn. After Topuria vs. Gaethje was announced, it was revealed that Makhachev is dealing with a hand injury that has indefinitely postponed his targeted Octagon return timeline.<\/p>\n<p>Topuria recently claimed in an interview that Makhachev and his team refused to fight him at the upcoming White House event after prolonged negotiations. According to Makhachev, Topuria\u2019s side of the story isn\u2019t the correct one.<\/p>\n<p>Islam Makhachev: Ilia Topuria \u2018pulled out\u2019 of White House fight offer<\/p>\n<p>In a recent post to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MAKHACHEVMMA\/status\/2041305015474618766?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">X<\/a>, Makhachev responded to Topuria\u2019s latest claims about the upcoming White House card and why their fight didn\u2019t come to fruition.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m tired of hearing made-up stories from Topuria and his team,\u201d Makhachev said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got the call and accepted the fight at the White House. The next day, I was told he asked for an unrealistic purse. The UFC declined, and he pulled out. That\u2019s it nothing more to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven his manager confirmed it,\u201d Makhachev continued. \u201cIlia, stop talking. Every interview you give tells a different story. You pulled out, and you know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As of this writing, Topuria hasn\u2019t responded to Makhachev\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of a potential Makhachev return timeline, manager Ali Abdelaziz recently claimed that they\u2019re in active talks for the UFC welterweight champion to return in July against a to-be-named contender.
