LONDON – Japan midfielder Ao Tanaka scored his fourth goal of the season as Leeds United defeated West Ham in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The Samurai Blue playmaker initiated the attack before displaying fancy footwork to beat his marker and open the scoring from the center of the box in the 26th minute at London Stadium.<\/p>\n
Tanaka’s team still led 1-0 when he headed to the bench in the 69th minute, and they soon after doubled the advantage through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but two injury-time goals from West Ham left the match deadlocked 2-2 through 120 minutes.<\/p>\n
Leeds prevailed 4-2 in the shootout to advance to the semifinals of the storied tournament for the first time since 1987.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere in Europe, Ritsu Doan, who captained Japan in a historic friendly win over England last week, started for Eintracht Frankfurt and was substituted in the 67th minute of their 2-2 draw with FC Koln at Deutsche Bank Park.<\/p>\n
