{"id":590757,"date":"2026-04-07T07:21:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T07:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/590757\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T07:21:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T07:21:08","slug":"some-might-pay-noel-gallagher-guitar-used-to-write-oasiss-second-album-to-be-auctioned-oasis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/590757\/","title":{"rendered":"Some might pay: Noel Gallagher guitar used to write Oasis\u2019s second album to be auctioned | Oasis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Incredibly, some critics were lukewarm about Oasis\u2019s second album, with one calling it \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/recordcollectormag.com\/reviews\/album\/whats-the-story-morning-glory-deluxe-30th-anniversary-edition-album\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">laboured and lazy<\/a>\u201d and another dismissing it as a \u201cmarginally less hook-laden reprise\u201d of their debut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But (What\u2019s the Story) Morning Glory? went on to become the bestselling British album of the 90s and a guitar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/noel-gallagher\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Noel Gallagher<\/a> used to write it will, Sotheby\u2019s has announced, be a star lot of its April rock and pop sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gallagher\u2019s signed Epiphone EJ-200 acoustic guitar will feature alongside a handwritten lyric sheet for Don\u2019t Look Back in Anger and a Rickenbacker 12-string guitar used by Gallagher for a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/about\/team\/craig-inciardi\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Craig Inciardi, Sotheby\u2019s New York-based pop culture specialist<\/a>, said Gallagher used acoustic guitars to write a lot of the band\u2019s songs and the jumbo-sized one up for sale was \u201ctypical of what he plays to this day\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The guitar comes with a letter of authenticity stating it was used throughout the making of the album, which was recorded in just 15 days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt was quite extraordinary how they managed to record it in such a fast period of time,\u201d said Inciardi. \u201cHe was just so prolific at the time \u2026 with the amount of songs that were coming out of him, it\u2019s almost unprecedented. And if you look at that album and you look at the track listing, it looks like a greatest hits album.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Its songs include Don\u2019t Look Back in Anger, Wonderwall, Morning Glory, Some Might Say and Champagne Supernova.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It sold a phenomenal 350,000 copies in its first week of release in October 1995 and would go on to sell 22m, making it one of the top 50 of all time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DrARl0dzd-0\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roll With It<\/a>, also on the album, was a major player in that summer\u2019s \u201cBattle of Britpop\u201d rivalry with Blur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It prompted a media frenzy, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2015\/aug\/17\/blur-oasis-britpop-number-one-1995-20-years\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Guardian sending out reporters to talk to fans in record shops<\/a> to assess who was winning the chart battle between Oasis\u2019s Roll With It and Blur\u2019s Country House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWorking-class heroes lead art-school trendies\u201d, read the resulting Guardian headline. The Los Angeles Times called it \u201cThe Battle of Britain\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The story seemed to drag on for ages, with the Wall Street Journal, in January 1996, declaring: \u201cThere is no sitting on the fence. Either you are a Blur fan or you are for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/oasis\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oasis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gallagher\u2019s guitar will feature alongside with a handwritten lyric sheet for the song Don\u2019t Look Back in Anger and a Rickenbacker 12-string guitar used by Gallagher for a decade. Photograph: Sotheby\u2019s<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cYet unlike the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, to whom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/blur\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blur<\/a> and Oasis are endlessly compared, there has been real acrimony in this rivalry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The guitar was given by Gallagher to a roadie and it was bought from them by the person selling it, Inciardi said. \u201cHe is a huge Oasis fan. He was in the social circles of people who were around the band at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">For fans and collectors, guitars like the one on sale are \u201choly grails\u201d or relics, said Inciardi. \u201cThese are functional objects that have become so sought after and the value of musical instruments that have this sort of historic provenance has significantly increased over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The guitar, which is being auctioned for the first time, has an estimate of $60,000-$80,000 (\u00a345,000-\u00a360,000).
