{"id":59108,"date":"2025-08-11T04:00:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T04:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/59108\/"},"modified":"2025-08-11T04:00:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T04:00:09","slug":"the-ugly-reality-facing-millions-of-australians-and-why-its-not-going-to-get-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/59108\/","title":{"rendered":"The ugly reality facing millions of Australians &#8211; and why it&#8217;s not going to get better"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">An expert has warned Australia&#8217;s middle class is slowly disappearing while the wealthy are becoming richer due to the cost-of-living crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Associate Professor of Law at the University of Wollongong Andy Schmulow, 54,\u00a0argued everyday Australians were being forced to spend more on necessities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Meanwhile, bloated corporations were getting richer as they were not motivated to bring down prices because there was little competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;We have widening wealth disparity in Australia because of the cost-of-living crisis,&#8217; Prof\u00a0Schmulow told Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;It&#8217;s\u00a0causing those who don&#8217;t benefit from the cost-of-living crisis to get poorer, and those who do benefit from the cost-of-living crisis to get fabulously wealthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;That cost-of-living crisis is being driven by a lack of competition in a whole range of critical markets.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">When Aussies think about their everyday expenses, the quickest to pop into most people&#8217;s minds is groceries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A report from the\u00a0Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) earlier this year found Coles and Woolworths, Australia&#8217;s supermarket giants, are among the most profitable grocers globally.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-a7403da32aca3216\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/101002025-14978331-image-m-16_1754561807727.jpg\" height=\"838\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Associate Professor of Law Andy Schmulow (pictured) believes Australia's cost-of-living crisis is being driven by a lack of competitors in major markets\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Associate Professor of Law Andy Schmulow (pictured) believes Australia&#8217;s cost-of-living crisis is being driven by a lack of competitors in major markets<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;The executive management of Coles and Woolworths are getting six-figure salaries thanks to the fact that they are running what the ACCC determined are among the most profitable supermarkets in the world,&#8217;\u00a0Prof Schmulow said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;The reason why Coles and Woolworths are now some of the most profitable supermarkets in the world is because they have no competition &#8211; they&#8217;re a duopoly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;It is well understood in economics that if you don&#8217;t have enough competition, prices will go up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;We used to have lots of supermarkets in Australia &#8211; Coles, Safeway, Franklin, Barlow&#8217;s. Now we have a supermarket duopoly, ColesWorth.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Prof Schmulow highlighted the chains&#8217; staggering returns shareholders receive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Supermarkets in Europe have an average return on equity of 0.7 per cent and in the United States they have an average return on equity of 1.4 per cent. Coles&#8217; return on equity is upward of 30 per cent,&#8217; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;That&#8217;s why groceries are so expensive.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Prof\u00a0Schmulow explained more market competitors drive competitive rates, meaning Aussies could have more access to affordable groceries if there were reliable alternatives to Coles and Woolworths.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-e39dd44f6354cdaf\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/101002139-14978331-Prof_Schmulow_claimed_legal_bribes_like_political_donations_from-m-17_17545619242.jpeg\" height=\"555\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Prof Schmulow claimed 'legal bribes' - like political donations from Woolworths or exclusive memberships from Qantas - kept Australia's market limited (pictured, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce)\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Prof Schmulow claimed &#8216;legal bribes&#8217; &#8211; like political donations from Woolworths or exclusive memberships from Qantas &#8211; kept Australia&#8217;s market limited (pictured, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, the current market has left little room for any new business to move in as there&#8217;s already a Coles or Woolworths in most areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;There&#8217;s a very, very easy way to fix this &#8211; break up Coles and Woolworths. Break up the duopoly,&#8217;\u00a0Prof Schmulow said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;The ACCC has determined they are a duopoly and among the most profitable supermarket chain in the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;My proposal would be to say to Coles and Woolworths, you have six months to sell off a third\u00a0of your supermarkets to a new company, which is then sold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;But they would need to sell a broad range of their stores, not just the least profitable ones.&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, the lack of options for Aussie consumers doesn&#8217;t just impact grocery bills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Prof\u00a0Schmulow pointed to Qantas&#8217; dominance over the aviation industry and the control the Big Four banks &#8211;\u00a0Commonwealth Bank, NAB, Westpac and ANZ &#8211; hold over the finance sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Qantas is one of the most profitable legacy airlines in the world and it is so incredibly profitable because it doesn&#8217;t have real genuine competition,&#8217; he said.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-eca0a5f7af704675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/101002221-14978331-image-a-18_1754875655371.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Several of Australia's biggest corporations, like Woolworths and the Commonwealth Bank, donate thousands of dollars to the Labor Party and Coalition every year (stock image)\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Several of Australia&#8217;s biggest corporations, like Woolworths and the Commonwealth Bank, donate thousands of dollars to the Labor Party and Coalition every year (stock image)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Our Big Four banks are also among the most profitable in the world, with a population of just 26million people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;We don&#8217;t have a divestiture power and our bank regulator, APRA, prioritises bank stability by having less banks &#8211; even though involves providing less competition and less choice to consumers.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Prof Schmulow claims the government claimed there was one major reason why the government had not introduced a divestiture power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Several of Australia&#8217;s biggest corporations, like Woolworths and the Commonwealth Bank, donate thousands of dollars to the Labor Party and Coalition every year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;If you don&#8217;t get millions of dollars in campaign contributions, you can&#8217;t fight an election,&#8217; Prof\u00a0Schmulow, who previously ran for a NSW senate seat, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Neither party can turn around and say, &#8220;Why don&#8217;t we just stop taking donations?&#8221; because the other party will still be taking donations and they&#8217;ll win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;If you want to win, shut your mouth.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Instead of leaving the decision to accept or reject corporate donations up to individual parties,\u00a0Prof Schmulow recommended businesses be banned from political donations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Corporations should have nothing to do with what happens in government.
